About Us
At AUAR (Automated Architecture), we’re redefining how the world builds housing. Our mission is bold: make sustainable, high-quality housing universally accessible. We’ve created an end-to-end, tech-driven approach - from our cloud-based design-to-manufacturing software MasterBuilder to micro, pop-up robotic Micro-Factories that manufacture timber homes.
We’ve proven our impact with early customers and are scaling fast across the UK, EU, and US. Backed by visionary leadership and a robust financial foundation, we're not just building homes -we're building a better future for people and the planet.
???? About the Role
We are looking for an Electrical/Controls Engineer to join our multidisciplinary automation team at AUAR. You’ll be helping us build and deploy the AUAR Micro Factory - our intelligent, rapidly deployable "factory-in-a-box" that enables the construction of high-performance, low-carbon homes. Our Micro Factories are already being deployed in multiple continents, and we're scaling fast.
You will be responsible for the design, integration, and commissioning of the electrical and control systems that enable our Micro-Factories to operate safely, reliably, and efficiently in diverse partner sites across the world. This role will cover both the R&D of future systems and continuous improvement of Micro-Factories currently being deployed.
You’ll work closely with robotics, mechanical, and deployment engineers to ensure seamless system integration, safety compliance, and field maintainability. Your work will be instrumental to helping scale the Micro-Factory product into a global solution for housebuilding.
This will be the first dedicated hire in electrical and controls engineering at AUAR, providing a unique opportunity to lead and define this discipline as the company grows.
️ Key Responsibilities
- Design and specify electrical systems for industrial automation, including 3-phase 400V and 230V power distribution, 24V control circuits and industrial communication protocols (e.g., EtherCAT, Profinet, Modbus).
- Develop wiring schematics, panel layouts, and cable harness designs that support modular, quickly-deployable systems.
- Select and integrate components such as circuit protection devices, contactors, safety relays, motors, servo drives, and industrial sensors.
- Ensure all electrical designs are adaptable for global markets (e.g. compliant with local US and European legislation).
- Lead installation, commissioning, and testing of electrical systems both in-house and on customer sites.
- Collaborate with robotics developers and mechanical engineers to ensure coherent integration of electrical and control hardware.
- Design and test machine safety systems (e.g. E-stops, light curtains, interlocks, safety scanners) compliant with relevant standards
- Conduct risk assessments and generate the relevant compliance reports and product certification documents (e.g., CE/UKCA marking processes)
- Support troubleshooting, maintenance planning, and creation of electrical documentation packages (wiring diagrams, installation instructions, product manuals).
- Select, qualify, and manage any external suppliers to ensure all outsourced work meets quality, budget, and delivery schedules.
- Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized workshop space.
- Promote healthy and safe working conditions in our facilities and in the equipment we ship to customers.
- Ensure manufacturing processes are carried out in an environmentally responsible manner.
️ About You
- You have 5+ years of experience designing, building, and troubleshooting industrial electrical systems.
- You have a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- You have strong, hands-on experience working with 3-phase 400V/240V systems, 24VDC control circuits, and industrial communication protocols (e.g., EtherCAT, Profinet, Modbus).
- You are proficient in generating wiring schematics, panel layouts, and BOMs.
- You are familiar with PLC hardware selection and I/O integration (programming experience is a plus but not mandatory).
- You have expert knowledge of machine safety systems and related electrical safety standards.
- You have demonstrable experience with UK/European (UKCA/CE) electrical standards, and ideally, familiarity with U.S. standards and best practices (e.g. NEC, NFPA 79, UL) to enable the design of systems suitable for deployment in the UK, Europe and USA.
- You have experience writing product/user manuals for end users to operate, maintain and troubleshoot automation equipment.
- You are comfortable working hands-on with tools during assembly and commissioning phases.
- You’re comfortable supporting installations onsite and solving real-world electrical challenges.
- You have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- You’re happy to do some travel as part of the role.
Bonus if you have:
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols.
- Experience with ABB robot integration from an electrical perspective.
- Experience working in modular, prefabricated, or mobile equipment systems.
- Experience in offsite manufacturing, construction technology, or start-up product development environments.
