Job description

Be part of shaping the UK’s nuclear future. As an Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineering Apprentice at Cavendish Nuclear, you’ll combine technical learning with real-world engineering as you help design, build and maintain specialist nuclear facilities. Over 4 years, you’ll gain the skills, knowledge and professional experience to kick‑start a career that makes a meaningful difference.

About the programme

In this varied role, you’ll join one of our engineering teams working across either our Civil Decommissioning or Defence business streams. From designing control systems to developing Computer Aided Design (CAD) models and performing electrical load calculations, every task helps ensure the safety and sustainability of nuclear infrastructure. You’ll support the full design lifecycle: from initial concept through to detailed design and design for manufacture.

Typical tasks may include producing technical documentation, assessing designs for risk and safety, and learning to work with standards and regulations that apply across the industry.

As part of your development, you’ll take part in internal training that broadens your knowledge beyond your core role. This includes radiological shielding, risk assessment and nuclear appreciation modules – all designed to give you a well‑rounded understanding of how we create a safe and secure world.

What you’ll need
  • A minimum of five GCSEs at grade C/4 or above, including Maths, English and Science, plus one of the following:
  • 104 UCAS points from A Levels including Maths and Physics or another STEM subject at grade C
  • BTEC Extended Diploma: DMM in Engineering including Maths units
  • Access course: 104 points including 15 Level 3 credits in Maths and Physics or STEM at Merit
  • International Baccalaureate: Pass with 104 points from Higher Level subjects including Higher Level 6 in Maths and Physics or STEM
  • T Level: Merit including Maths and Physics
  • IELTS: 6.0 overall with no component lower than 5.5
  • Many of our programmes are subject to Security Clearance and Trade Control restrictions which mean that your place of birth, nationality, citizenship, or residency you hold or have held may impact which programmes you are eligible for. For this programme, you must be able to achieve and maintain Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) and Security Check (SC) clearance. For further details, visit GOV.UK and search ‘United Kingdom Security Vetting: clearance levels’.
  • Under applicable national security legislation, this post may only be occupied by a sole UK national. This legal requirement is independent of our recruitment policies, and all eligible applicants will be assessed fairly and without discrimination.
What you’ll get

We’ll provide you with a supportive and engaging environment where you can grow your career. In addition, you’ll benefit from:

  • Fully funded qualification
  • Personal development training and opportunities
  • Minimum 28 days holiday allowance including bank holidays
  • Competitive pension scheme
  • Employee share scheme
  • Flexible benefits including cycle to work scheme and employee shopping savings portal

You’ll also have the chance to get involved in our STEM outreach activities and volunteering opportunities, which our apprentices find incredibly rewarding.

Your career development

It’s hard to beat the variety of fantastic opportunities and business experiences you’ll receive. You can expect real world encounters and exposure to exciting projects that will really help you navigate where you want to take your career. Plus, when you join us, you’ll be automatically enrolled onto our Apprentice Development Programme. Through a series of digital and face to face sessions, presented by wellbeing and performance experts and our external partners, we will equip you with the knowledge and tools you need to thrive and perform at your very best on your programme and beyond.

Future prospects

By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll be ready to take on the role of Electrical, Control and Instrumentation Engineer at Cavendish Nuclear. You’ll also have the opportunity to build on your progress toward professional registration as an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer, a recognised benchmark of engineering competence, which can support your journey into more advanced roles, such as Senior Engineer. As a global organisation, Babcock provides countless opportunities to enhance your skills and advance your career. To support your growth, we’ve introduced the Babcock Role Framework, which outlines roles, career pathways, and development opportunities. With every job mapped to these frameworks, you’ll have a transparent view of the steps needed to reach Senior Engineer and beyond.

You will study towards the Product Design and Development Engineer (Degree) Apprenticeship standard through the University of Lancashire. Your training will be delivered through a blended learning model that combines in-person and online teaching. Each semester begins with a three-day block of face‑to‑face delivery, followed by weekly online sessions throughout the term. This structure is designed to support both academic learning and practical application. The programme is tailored for engineers involved in product development and integrates key disciplines such as materials science, Computer Aided Design (CAD), systems integration, and prototyping. It focuses on equipping learners to create fit‑for‑purpose solutions in regulated environments. Upon successful completion, you will be awarded a BEng (Hons) in Professional Engineering (Product Design) and a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship qualification.
