Job description

Company: Xstrahl Ltd

Department: R&D

Location: Brownhills, West Midlands

Salary range to include on advert: £40,000 to £42,000 per annum

Company Overview

Xstrahl is proud to be an industry leading medical technology company that designs clinical and research systems to help eradicate cancer. For more than 20 years, Xstrahl has been shaping the development of superficial and orthovoltage therapies for cancer treatment and advancing pre-clinical research. Xstrahl systems are in operation at more than 700 treatment and research facilities worldwide.

Are you a passionate problem solver who enjoys working with a meaningful mission?

With recent growth, we are looking to hire an Electrical and Electronics Engineer to join our R&D team in the West Midlands. This role will support existing and new product activities, contributing to the electrical and electronic design and development.

What’s involved?

As an Electrical and Electronics Engineer, reporting to the Chief Technology Officer, you will provide electrical and electronic design and engineering support for Xstrahl therapy and research cabinet systems, working closely with the wider R&D team to support designs from concept through to verification, compliance and manufacturing. In order to achieve this, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the design and validation of embedded systems based on ARM architectures and running real-time operating systems.
  • Contributing to the development of motor control modules that drive precision mechanical systems, from design through to integration and verification.
  • Designing and reviewing power supply circuits (DC/DC and AC/DC) for low and medium-power applications, working within established topologies and design standards.
  • Supporting product safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) activities, including testing, debugging and updating designs to help meet emission standards, safety regulations and environmental requirements.
  • Using CAD tools to capture schematics, layout printed circuit boards, and maintain complete, controlled design documentation necessary for manufacturing, verification and regulatory review.
  • Maintaining existing electrical designs, debug and solve problems and issues reported from the field, identifying root causes and implementing robust corrective design actions.
What does it take to be successful?

Communication will be important in this role — as an Electrical and Electronics Engineer you will work closely with senior engineers and be able to communicate technical matters clearly to colleagues across engineering, physics and clinical teams. You will combine hands‑on design capability with a structured approach to risk, verification and compliance. This will naturally require good verbal and written communication that is both clear and accurate. In addition, you’ll also need:

  • 7+ years’ experience in printed circuit board design, including schematic capture, component selection, layout, and design verification.
  • Experience contributing to electrical and electronic hardware designs, from requirements through to integration and verification.
  • Experience supporting products into manufacturing (desirable).
  • Good technical communication skills, with the ability to explain design decisions and evidence to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience of working within controlled product-development processes in a highly regulated environment would be beneficial, including design reviews, risk management, configuration control and verification evidence.
  • Direct hands‑on experience of bringing up and debugging new electrical and electronic designs, using structured fault‑finding methods and appropriate laboratory equipment.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary team would be beneficial.
  • Familiar with industry-standard electronic design automation CAD tools, such as Altium, Cadence, or OrCAD, including schematic capture, printed circuit board layout and design library control.
  • Familiar with theory and operation of various power supply topologies, microcontrollers, and analog and digital concepts, and their application in integrated electro‑mechanical products.
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, or HNC/HND with relevant industry experience.
What’s in it for you?
