Title: English Learner (EL) Teacher Consultant for Center Programs

Location: Center Programs

Classification: KIEA

Reports to and Evaluated By: Director of Student Services

Terms of

Employment: 182 day position, subject to all rules and regulations covering KIEA teachers

BROAD STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide English Language Development (ELD) instruction to English learners enrolled in Kent ISD center programs, focusing on improving their proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Support students’ individual needs by participating in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process and identifying appropriate supplemental aids and services and assessments. Collaborate and consult with teachers and staff to enhance ELs’ language development and support their academic success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement evidence-based ELD curriculum aligned with common core standards, essential elements, WIDA standards, and IEP goals and objectives.
  • Provide appropriate scaffolding, modifications, accommodations, and differentiation based on ELs’ WIDA proficiency levels and extensive support needs related to the core features of their disability.
  • Conduct WIDA screenings and assessments for ELs.
  • Consult and collaborate with teachers and staff on integration of content and language instruction for ELs.
  • Attend and participate in IEP team meetings for ELs, identifying appropriate supplemental aids and services and assessments.
  • Continue to develop professionally and learn of current practices in the field, specifically ESL and special education, by attending seminars, workshops, professional learning opportunities, etc.
  • Organize and maintain a system on accurate and complete documentation, reporting, and service delivery as required by program requirements and applicable laws.
  • Encourage parental involvement in ELs’ education and ensure effective communication with EL students and families.
  • Coordinate with teachers and staff and participate in meetings and committees.
  • Select appropriate resources, instructional aids, and other materials for instruction.
  • Collaborate with the Student Services team, including consultants and coaches, to support and contribute to special projects and initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal and/or supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree, ideally in education, English, or a related field, from an accredited university.
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate, with an ESL or Bilingual endorsement required. Special education endorsement preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience working with ELs and students with extensive support needs, preferred.
  • Knowledge of English language acquisition and WIDA assessment.
  • Knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessments and evaluations, and research related to English language acquisition.
  • Understand and comply with the policies, rules, and regulations regarding
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state requirements for language assistance programs and education of ELs.
  • Must possess exceptional organizational skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills in order to effectively interact with colleagues, local/state/national education representatives, regulatory/funding agencies, constituent districts, and the public-at-large.
  • Ability to work constructively with parents, students, staff, and community agencies.
  • Must pass a criminal background check as required by School Safety Legislation.

Salary:Per KIEA Master Agreement/ Commensurate with education and experience (BA Step 1-5 = $51,106-$61,927/year; BA+18 Step 1-5 = $54,644-$64,531/year; MA Step 1-5 = $57,766-68,695/year; MA+15 Step 1-5 = $60,370-$71,821/year; MA+MA,MA+30 Step 1-5 = $62,972-$74,423/year).
