Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced OT, Social Worker or Nurse to work within the Newham Early Intervention Service (NEIS). The service supports 18-65 year olds experiencing a First Episode of Psychosis, aiming to reduce the impact of psychosis by reducing the duration of untreated psychosis and engaging clients in biopsychosocial interventions. NEIS is a progressive and evolving team, seeking candidates who are interested in creative approaches to supporting individuals with First Episode Psychosis and whose values align with the team. Newham has a high rate of psychosis; NEIS aims to develop a sustainable model of care that collaborates with service users, families and community-based services. We welcome candidates passionate about using innovative and community-based approaches to support recovery for individuals and their networks. You would work in a highly motivated multidisciplinary team and will be supported in professional development through accredited training or new projects. We also welcome ideas to broaden the scope of therapeutic interventions.

Main duties
  • Be a member of the Early Intervention service and deliver services to people in Newham with First Episode Psychosis, as defined by service referral criteria.
  • Establish relationships with educational, vocational and leisure facilities; maintain a database/resource of organisations; interface effectively with other community organisations.
  • Be involved in service evaluation data and supervise/co-ordinate the work of trainees/students of your related profession, as appropriate.
  • Be involved in training/health promotion related to First Episode Psychosis as required.
  • Contribute to the delivery of service to people with First Episode Psychosis and provide specialist assessment, psychosocial/psychotherapeutic skills, and practical support within health and social care frameworks.
  • Participate in setting up and running service user and carer groups; promote confidence building, meaningful occupation and recovery.
  • Provide a whole-team approach to support, promote recovery, identify needs and strengths, maintain a user-centred and holistic service, and promote safety and positive risk taking.
  • Ensure the service meets high professional standards and adheres to policies and procedures; promote fair access, equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice.
Person Specification

Education & Training

  • Essential: Formal qualifications in health or social care (e.g., RMN, Dip SW, etc.). Post-registration experience.
  • Desirable: Psychosocial Intervention Qualification and/or recognised psychotherapy training; Family intervention training.

Experience

  • Essential: Experience of working with people with serious mental health difficulties in a multi-disciplinary environment; experience in a health trust or social services department; experience supervising junior staff and/or students; experience carrying out assessments including physical health.
  • Desirable: Experience of working with people with first episode psychosis and their carers; working in a multi-cultural setting, including with interpreters.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Essential: Knowledge or experience of early intervention in psychosis; ability to prepare written and verbal reports; creative and resourceful; knowledge of welfare and vocational issues; ability to work in a team with initiative; problem solving; commitment to recovery; flexible and adaptable; ability to identify needs and strengths; user-centred care; promote safety and positive risk taking; presentation and teaching skills; lifelong learning and self-motivation; ability to prioritise and manage own workload; excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Desirable: Experience of preparing and delivering formal/informal presentations; involvement in setting up a new service; experience in a team caseload/assertive community engagement; ability to facilitate development across organisations; ability to work in partnership and build constructive relationships; experience liaising with statutory and voluntary sectors; holistic work with individuals and groups considering social, economic and cultural factors in mental health.
