Job summary

Northern Powergrid is seeking a Project Engineer to join the Major Projects department. The role focuses on developing and delivering EHV construction projects to time, cost, quality, and safety standards, with responsibilities spanning scopes, cost proposals, equipment design, and procurement.

You will interface with external stakeholders and internal teams, act as CDM Designer, and provide status reports while ensuring project objectives and safety compliance are met.

Qualifications

  • Minimum HNC electrical engineering or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of power systems and safety management in construction.

Responsibilities

  • Project manage the development and delivery of EHV projects to Time, Cost and Quality.
  • Drafting detailed project scopes and technical specifications for proposed EHV projects.
  • Production of accurate and detailed firm cost proposals for a developed EHV design solution.
  • Development of EHV plant, equipment and Building & Civil designs and specifications; procurement of necessary plant, equipment and services.
  • Interface with external stakeholders and internal resources to deliver EHV projects.
  • CDM Designer and/or Principal Designer for HV/EHV projects.
  • Provide accurate, timely reports on progress and status of projects.
  • Close-out and review delivered projects against objectives and success criteria.
  • Maintain knowledge of safety regulations and CDM practices in project works.
  • Monitor tendering and administration of contracts for substations, OHL and cable works.
  • Lead cross-functional project teams and manage interfaces to meet delivery goals.
  • Ensure delivery timescales are tracked and reported against objectives.
  • Aspire to Competent Person status under Distribution Safety Rules.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Project Engineer to join our Major Projects department. The non-operational Project Engineer is responsible for the effective development and delivery management of allocated construction projects to time cost, quality and safety standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Project manage the development and delivery of EHV projects to Time, Cost and Quality
  • Drafting detailed project scopes and technical specifications for proposed EHV projects.
  • Production of accurate and detailed firm cost proposals for a developed EHV design solution
  • Development of EHV plant, equipment and Building & Civil designs and specifications and the procurement of all necessary plant, equipment and services needed to deliver a project.
  • Interface with external stakeholders as well as internal and external resources to develop and deliver EHV projects
  • Undertake the role of CDM Designer and / or Principal Designer for developed HV/EHV projects
  • Provide accurate and timely reports on progress and status of projects in development and delivery
  • Formally close-out and review delivered projects against business objectives and success criteria
  • Knowledge of engineering standards, engineering design principles and practice in the development and delivery of power systems and major projects
  • Knowledge and practical application of safety legislation / procedures, specifically the CDM regulations as it applies to project works
  • Knowledge and experience of the tendering and administration of engineering and construction contracts associated with project works including; substations, overhead line and cable works
  • Ability to project manage construction projects using project management disciplines with a track record of delivering projects from inception to completion
  • Ability to effectively lead and manage cross functional project teams including multiple contract resources / interfaces to meet defined project requirements and delivery objectives
  • Knowledge and ability to monitor and maintain project delivery timescales and provide, accurate and timely progress and status reporting against agreed time cost and quality objectives
  • The necessary background experience and technical knowledge to attain Competent Person status as defined in the Company’s Distribution Safety Rules to facilitate personal access to the Company’s operational sites
Qualifications & Experience
Essential Qualifications (evidence must be provided):
  • Minimum HNC electrical engineering or equivalent
  • Knowledge and experience of power systems and associated engineering requirements
  • Safety management in a construction environment
  • Demonstrated ability to drive project development and delivery plans forward to meet time, cost, quality and safety standards
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject
  • NEBOSH or equivalent formal qualification in safety management
  • Project engineering experience of major project works including - substations, either primary or secondary system design or OHL / cable system design
  • Knowledge of financial and project management systems e.g. Oracle and MPD
Grade:

Technical Level B (pay point 13-21)

Remuneration:

£55,940 - £76,499, personal transport provision of £330/month + up to 10% pa Team Leader bonus
