Job description

About BYD

BYD is a global leader in electric vehicles and clean energy solutions, with a clear purpose: to build a zero-emission future that reconnects humanity with nature. As BYD continues its rapid growth in the UK, we are building a best-in-class in-house media capability to drive brand awareness, consideration, and demand for our EV & PHEV portfolio.

About the Role

As EHS Manager, you will take ownership of Health, Safety, and Environmental performance across our portfolio of grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects throughout the UK. Working closely with engineering, operations, contractors, clients, and investors, you will ensure that all activities are delivered safely, compliantly, and in line with industry best practice.

This role covers the full project lifecycle, from construction and commissioning through to long-term Operations & Maintenance (O&M). You will be responsible for developing and maintaining robust HSE systems, leading audits and inspections, investigating incidents, and driving a proactive safety culture across multiple sites.

This role is a field base role including travelling to 3 locations in the UK.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing, implementing, and continuously improving HSE management systems for high-voltage BESS projects.

  • Ensuring compliance with UK legislation, including CDM 2015, the Health and Safety at Work Act, Electricity at Work Regulations, and environmental requirements.

  • Conducting site audits, inspections, and compliance reviews across multiple locations.

  • Leading incident investigations, root cause analyses, and the implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

  • Reviewing and approving Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) and Safe Systems of Work (SSoW).

  • Acting as the primary HSE contact for clients, investors, auditors, and regulatory authorities.

  • Supporting and mentoring junior HSE personnel while promoting a positive, safety-first culture throughout the organisation.

About You

You are a proactive and experienced HSE professional with a strong background in utility-scale energy, power infrastructure, high-voltage environments, or battery energy storage projects. You are confident working independently, influencing stakeholders at all levels, and driving continuous improvement across complex operational environments.

You bring:

  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in an HSE management role within utility-scale renewables, high-voltage substations, power generation, transmission and distribution, or grid-scale BESS projects.

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or NEBOSH Diploma.

  • Strong knowledge of CDM 2015, Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, and UK environmental legislation.

  • Experience managing contractor and subcontractor safety performance across multiple sites.

  • Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and report-writing skills.

  • The ability to build trusted relationships with clients, investors, regulators, and operational teams.

  • A valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel regularly to project sites across the UK.

  • The right to work in the United Kingdom.

Desirable:
  • Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH).

  • Experience within Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) or other energy infrastructure projects.

  • Experience working with institutional investors, lenders, or asset owners.

What You Need to Be Successful

To succeed in this role, you will combine strong technical HSE expertise with excellent leadership and stakeholder management skills. You will be comfortable operating in a fast-growing environment where safety, compliance, and operational excellence are critical to business success.

You will :

  • Demonstrate a visible commitment to creating and maintaining a zero-harm culture.

  • Be highly organised and capable of managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

  • Take a pragmatic and solutions-focused approach to risk management and compliance.

  • Build credibility and trust with site teams, contractors, clients, and senior leadership.

  • Maintain high standards while balancing operational and commercial objectives.

  • Drive continuous improvement through data, lessons learned, and industry best practices.

  • Act as a champion for health, safety, and environmental excellence across the organisation.
