Environmental Health Officers/Environmental Protection Officer/Private Sector Housing Officer/Food Safety Officer/Enforcement Officer

Salary: A range of roles available at Grade SOM 12 (£27,711 – £31,067 per annum) & Grade SOM 10 (£36,124 - £40,476 per annum)

Contract: Permanent

Location: Somerset (Offices at Taunton, Bridgwater, Shepton Mallet, Yeovil as required)

Hours: Full time, 37 hours per week

Somerset Council’s Environmental Health team is a busy, multi-disciplinary team covering health and safety, food safety, environmental protection and private sector housing. An exciting opportunity for enthusiastic, hardworking and experienced Environmental Health professionals has become available within the team.

You will need to be organised, self-motivated and an excellent team player. A good knowledge of relevant legislation and any associated codes of practice/guidance is required for these roles, and experience of inspecting a range of premises and investigating complaints is essential.

You must have good verbal and written communication skills and be competent to deal with complex case work, taking enforcement action where necessary. We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate an adaptable and flexible approach, a positive attitude and an ability to work on your own initiative.

We are seeking the equivalent of 5 FTE posts to fulfil a range of roles within the Private Sector Housing, Environmental Protection, Food & Safety and Enforcement Teams.

Environmental Health Officer / Private Sector Housing Officer, Grade SOM 10, 37 hours per week

You would be expected to be involved in Houses in Multiple Occupancy (HMO) licencing and the investigation and enforcement of private sector housing complaints under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.

The successful candidate will be suitably qualified and experienced, with evidence of having completed training on Understanding, Applying and Enforcement of the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.

Environmental Health Officer / Environmental Protection Officer, Grade SOM 10, 37 hours per week

You would be expected to fulfil a range of environmental protection roles which could include:

  • Investigation and enforcement of noise, nuisance and other complaints,
  • Sampling and risk assessment of private water supplies,
  • Providing comments and advice on environmental aspects of planning and licensing applications,
  • Carrying out inspections of premises with permits under the Environmental Permitting Regulations,
  • Arranging public health funerals,
  • Giving advice on a range of environmental issues such as air quality and contaminated land.

The successful candidate will be suitably qualified and experienced with evidence of having continued to develop their skills and qualifications.

2x Environmental Health Officers / Food Safety Officers, Grade SOM 10, 37 hours per week

You would be expected to carry out a range of food hygiene inspections, food complaint and infectious disease/outbreak investigations. In addition, you will be required to hold a relevant health and safety qualification and have experience in H&S to ensure you can investigate complaints and accident investigations.

The successful candidate will possess one of the following, in accordance to the Food Law Code of Practice:

  • A degree in Environmental Health or The Higher Certificate in Food Control (awarded by either the Environmental Health Registration Board (EHRB) or the Scottish Food Safety Officers’ Registration Board (SFSORB)).
  • A certificate of Registration as an Environmental Health Practitioner from EHRB.
  • Diploma in Environmental Health (or historical equivalent) from EHRB or SFSORB.

Enforcement Officer, Grade SOM 12, 37 hours per week

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring compliance with Public Space Protection Orders, will have detailed practical knowledge of regulating environmental crime, understand the effective application of related legislation, conduct investigations, and take appropriate enforcement actions, including but not limited to:

  • Issuing Notices, fixed penalties and initiating prosecutions for non-compliance,
  • Dealing with unauthorized encampments on council owned land,
  • Investigating PSPO dog control complaints,
  • Investigating and dealing effectively with waste deposit contraventions and abandoned vehicles.

The successful candidate will be suitably qualified and experienced with evidence of having continued to develop their skills and qualifications.
