Job description

To support our portfolio of recent new build deals we are looking for an experienced engineering project manager to join our team, either in London or Derby, and support the introduction of cutting edge bi and tri-mode rolling stock into passenger service.

Who are we?

We are Rail People. Since our founding in 1994 we have been helping to modernise and improve UK rail to meet the needs of today’s passengers. We have invested more than £1.5 billion in rolling stock and innovation projects in the last ten years to become the UK’s largest rolling stock leasing company.

Our purpose is to serve the rail industry by bringing private investment into rail assets innovatively and sustainably throughout their lifecycle. Our culture of innovation, collaboration and commitment to excellence drives us to be a company that is valued by our customers and makes us the people that the rail industry most wants to work with.

We invest in small and medium businesses who drive our innovation in new technologies. From battery and hybrid powered traction systems to 3D printed parts and high-definition cameras on our assets. Our long-term outlook means we can support skilled jobs across the sector, from coast to coast, across the whole country.

We will continue to reimagine our investments, to work with the talented people in our industry and to engineer a brighter, greener, more cost-effective future for the railway in the United Kingdom. Together, we are creating an environment where people can enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Angel Trains. Rail People, Real Expertise.

About the role:

As an Angel Trains project manager, you will be responsible for the successful delivery of high-value, highly complex projects including cutting edge new build, refurbishment, re-engineering, reliability growth and retro-fit programmes.

On a day-to-day basis you will be interfacing with suppliers and customers at a project level and resolving issues that have been identified head-on through Project Steering Groups. You'll be the go-to person for resolving issues and ensuring everything runs smoothly.

But that's not all! You'll also be the face of Angel Trains in high-level contractual negotiations, forging strong relationships with existing customers and suppliers. Representing Angel Trains' interests, you'll make your mark in internal and industry stakeholder meetings, driving projects to success and beyond.

What will you be doing?

  • Delivering high-value, complex, engineering projects in line with agreed specifications, timescales, budgets, and to the correct standard of quality.
  • Contribute to the successful delivery of projects in line with approved DFA and by minimising contingency spend.
  • Prepare and present project approval papers to Angel Trains Board.
  • Identify, understand and mitigate risks in projects.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on achievable project deliverables and timescales in response to customer requests for modifications / enhancements to the fleets.
  • Review modification / enhancement requests in the context of long-term value and strategic fit with corporate objectives.
  • Engage with manufacturers to understand product development.

What do we need from you?

  • An engineering background or experience delivering projects within the rail sector.
  • A recognised project management qualification (either APMP or PRINCE2).
  • A proven track record of delivering multiple projects in a timely and efficient manner, ideally within the rail or other heavy engineering sectors.
  • Customer and supplier management experience.
  • Prior experience introducing new passenger rolling stock into service would be beneficial but is not a requirement.

  • A salary sacrifice Electric Vehicle benefit scheme.
  • Family-friendly and flexible working policies.
