Job Description:

Somerset Wildlife Trust is a local independent charity dedicated to improving Somerset's natural environment for wildlife and people. We promote Somerset’s diverse natural environment, advocate for nature to the public and policymakers, and lead environmental recovery efforts, including on our reserves.

The Purpose of the Role

To be part of the Somerset Nature Connections Project team, collaborating with the Quantock Hills, Blackdown Hills, and Mendip Hills AONBs.

The role involves developing and delivering programs that support adults and young people experiencing or vulnerable to physical and mental health issues. The goal is to connect them with nature through structured programs and community activities to enhance wellbeing and foster appreciation for the environment.

The post holder will manage program delivery tailored to participant needs, collaborate with local partners, and oversee monitoring, reporting, and evaluation.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Apply knowledge of how natural environments benefit health and wellbeing to deliver programs in partnership with Somerset’s AONBs, health and social care sectors, and specialists.
  • Facilitate nature connection sessions that maximize wellbeing and environmental benefits.
  • Engage with external organizations and community groups to establish connection sessions.
  • Ensure compliance with safeguarding and health and safety policies.
  • Support funding applications by gathering evidence from program delivery.
  • Assist Blackdown Hills AONB Community Ranger in integrating nature connection into future plans.
  • Conduct monitoring and evaluation focused on participant wellbeing to support funding and program development.
  • Collaborate with team members and volunteers, providing support and leadership as needed.
  • Follow reporting schedules and contribute content for project reports to funders.
  • Implement communication strategies to raise awareness and garner support for the project.
  • Complete relevant training, including Mental Health First Aid if not already obtained.
  • Coordinate with staff and organizations to refer participants to additional initiatives and training.
  • Develop and deliver training for staff and volunteers on the benefits of nature for wellbeing.
  • Maintain good relations with landowners and land managers to facilitate access to green spaces.
  • Organize and host community events promoting green space access and wellbeing benefits.
  • Work independently, using initiative to solve problems, make decisions, and develop new engagement ideas.
