Job description

We are looking for a Paralegal to join our Family team in Gloucester Road to support the lawyers with their cases and provide remote/direct support to other family lawyers across the other offices if required.

The Gloucester Road Family team covers a range of family matters including private children, domestic abuse, surrogacy, finances on divorce and separation. Our growing Family team in Bishopston consists of one Partner, three Lawyers, one Paralegal, four Legal Secretaries, and a Trainee Solicitor. The team is an integral part of our large family department which is spread over four of our five offices.

This role would suit someone who is looking to take the next step in their career and who may already be studying for CILEx or other legal qualifications.

The role

You will work on client cases with legal work but also provide some administrative support to the team and the department as required.

Paralegal work
  • Undertake certain elements of legal work under supervision, including interviewing clients, taking instructions, identifying appropriate funding (including Public Funding), keeping detailed file notes of instructions received and advice given, and attendances upon clients and other parties.
  • Deal with routine client enquiries and communications.
  • Maintain file checklists and keep client matters under review.
  • Assist fee earners with research and draft applications and court documents for approval.
  • Trace and interview witnesses, draft statements, and manage legal documentation.
  • Handle billing reminders and liaise with the accounts department.
  • Check and close files, and ensure confidentiality and security of all documentation.
  • Attend court for issuing legal documents and trial support.
  • Exercise high standards of client care and comply with professional conduct rules.
  • Maintain clear communication with team members and external institutions.
Administrative work
  • Assist support staff as required.
  • Prepare trial bundles, manage documents, and handle filing and scanning.
  • Take telephone messages, triage new clients, and manage correspondence.
  • Draft agendas and minutes for meetings.

This role may also include accounting, marketing, and business development activities.

The ideal candidate
  • Has completed LPC/GDL/SQE, a Law degree, or holds a CILEx Professional Qualification (CPQ) Foundation Stage or higher.
  • Has experience with legal practice management systems.
  • Is computer literate, especially in Word, Excel, Teams, and Zoom.
Location and working hours
  • Full-time (9am - 5.15pm, Monday to Friday).
  • Based at our Bishopston office with options for hybrid working after probation.
