Description
The Bioprocessing Scientist will apply in-depth technical expertise across a range of projects to support the development of bioprocessing technologies. The role is high profile, both within the CGT Catapult and outward facing to the Company’s stakeholders and Collaborators. Working in multidisciplinary teams, the Bioprocessing Scientist will play a central role in applying their bioprocessing and process characterisation knowledge to accelerate the development of a wide range of cell and gene therapy products including AAV production, iPSC expansion and differentiation. The role also involves supporting the integration of Process Analytical Technologies and digitalisation efforts to develop next-generation manufacturing platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and own laboratory activities related to upstream process (USP) development projects, including stock control, experimental design, reporting, and compliance with onsite procedures.
- Provide subject matter expertise in planning and executing laboratory work, reviewing ATMP-related products and processes, and preparing technical reports.
- Collaborate with CGT Catapult teams across different sites and disciplines as needed.
- Support and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and Collaborators to share innovative capabilities with the wider UK industry.
- Develop experimental plans, witness experiments, ensure raw data integrity, and produce study reports.
- Present data at conferences and meetings as appropriate.
- Plan and execute experiments to meet project goals.
- Engage with colleagues across departments to achieve objectives.
- Lead troubleshooting, optimisation, and implementation of cell culture methodologies.
- Develop and qualify analytical assays for characterising cell therapy products.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years’ industrial experience in life sciences or bio-engineering, or equivalent qualifications (PhD or BSc).
- Experience with upstream processing using STR and other cell culture technologies, including Ambr 15/250, Univessel 2L, Quantum, and DasBox systems.
- Experience with AAV or iPSC culture processes is desirable.
- Leadership experience in experimental planning and laboratory activities.
- Experience in laboratory and operational improvements is desirable.
- Experience performing analytical assays such as flow cytometry is desirable.
- Knowledge of statistical tools like method validation and Design of Experiments is desirable.
- Experience integrating PAT technologies into bioprocessing workflows is desirable.
- Proficiency in data handling and formatting is essential.
- Extensive experience in designing and executing bioprocessing studies from small-scale to large-scale STR experiments.

Education / Qualifications
- PhD or BSc in life sciences or bio-engineering, with at least 3 years of relevant industrial experience.
