Linux Engineer, Simple Storage and Glacier team ( S3G)

Sector: Engineering, Technology
Role: Professional
Contract Type: Permanent
Hours: Full Time

DESCRIPTION
Managing trillions of objects in storage, building software that deploys to tens of thousands of hosts, achieving 99.999999999% durability. These are just a few of the numbers that give you a sense of the scale of the exciting problems you will find every day working in Simple Storage Service (S3) and Glacier.
The Region Services S3 and Glacier Engineering team are looking for talented engineers who are motivated to solve complex challenges, yet are not constrained by "how things are usually done" and are willing to decompose and reinvent systems, processes and tools. If you possess that rare mix of depth in Operations, Networking, and Systems Engineering then we are waiting for your application.
Amazon has a fast-paced environment where we "Work Hard, Have Fun, Make History." On a "typical" day, systems engineers might deep dive to root cause a customer issue, investigate why a metric is trending the wrong way, consult with the top engineers at Amazon, or discuss radical new approaches to automate operational issues.

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations - from foundational services such as Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS's services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you'll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

This is an opportunity to operate and engineer systems on a massive scale. You'll be surrounded by people who are wickedly smart and believe that world-class service is critical to customer happiness.

Key job responsibilities
The team has the unique perspective of operating all of S3 and Glacier, instead of the software components. This enables our team to drive cross-organization initiatives to remove operational hurdles, optimize software delivery, and remove bottlenecks felt by all of AWS. Engineers on this diverse team enjoy diving deep into root causes of issues, automating manual tasks, and continually raising the bar to improve the customer experience.

A day in the life
On a "typical" day Engineers might:

  1. Drive the design and implementation of new services
  2. Use your Linux skills to troubleshoot, innovate fixes and workarounds
  3. Dive deep to root cause a customer issue
  4. Investigate why a metric is trending the wrong way
  5. Consult with the top engineers at Amazon
  6. Discuss radical new approaches to automate operational issues
  7. Implement automation to scale operational efficiencies

About the team
AWS values diverse experiences. Even if you do not meet all of the preferred qualifications and skills listed in the job description, we encourage candidates to apply. If your career is just starting, hasn't followed a traditional path, or includes alternative experiences, don't let it stop you from applying.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience writing scripts from scratch for automating manual tasks (BASH, Python, Perl, Ruby or similar)
  • Solid background in Linux. Familiarity with in-depth troubleshooting and ability to solve complex technical problems
  • Knowledge of network fundamentals (DNS, UDP, TCP/IP, HTTP (s), routing, switching)
  • Experience owning services that are secure, scalable, reliable and efficient. Can identify multiple operational and security risks and then resolve, mitigate and/or escalate them

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree in Systems Engineering, Computer Science or related field, or relevant work experience
  • Exposure to cloud computing concepts and design considerations
  • Experience in a 24x7 production environment
  • Experience of monitoring frameworks (such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic or similar)

Amazon is an equal opportunities employer. We believe passionately that employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We make recruiting decisions based on your experience and skills. We value your passion to discover, invent, simplify and build.
