This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in taking positive action to reduce the impact of the climate emergency on our people, homes, and environment through retrofit and other initiatives.

The role involves developing and delivering sustainability strategies and projects to ensure our homes are warm, dry, and affordable, while ensuring the organisation acts sustainably in response to the climate emergency and meets all regulatory and legal obligations.

You will be responsible for implementing and managing ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems, conducting site audits to uphold environmental standards, supporting procurement processes through technical copywriting and tender participation, and assisting with environmental assessments such as BREEAM, SKA, LEED, and WELL. The role also includes delivering training and promoting good practice across internal teams and subcontractors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver sustainability strategies, including energy efficiency and waste reduction programmes, to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory obligations
  • Provide technical advice on carbon reduction and environmental best practices, and keep the organisation informed of legislative and policy changes
  • Implement and manage ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems, and review audit options to ensure relevance and value
  • Monitor, analyse and report on sustainability performance, including energy use, waste diversion and carbon emissions, ensuring data is accurate and accessible
  • Conduct site audits to uphold environmental standards, promote good practice, and deliver on-site training to staff and subcontractors
  • Support procurement by contributing technical content for tenders and attending interviews as required
  • Assist with pre-construction and on-site sustainability certifications (e.g. BREEAM, SKA, LEED, WELL)
  • Identify and develop third-party funding opportunities to support sustainability objectives
  • Develop and deliver internal training, workshops and communications to promote sustainability policies and staff engagement
  • Engage with residents and external stakeholders to promote sustainable living behaviours
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of external stakeholders, including residents, contractors, regulatory bodies, and specialist advisers
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments to support delivery of the corporate plan and One Company approach
  • Champion continuous improvement, take ownership of performance targets, and contribute to a positive customer experience
  • Represent the organisation positively at all times, maintain excellent customer service, and ensure compliance with equality, diversity, and health and safety policies
More About You
  • Degree (Bachelors or Masters) in a relevant field, such as sustainability or environmental science
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, with experience in engaging a variety of stakeholders from residents, contractors and regulatory bodies
  • Experience building relationships to achieve shared objectives, including managing or motivating people or teams
  • Expert knowledge of sustainability and environmental best practice in the housing sector
  • Broad understanding of the funding landscape, key funding bodies and government departments in sustainability and environment
  • Experience managing sustainability projects, risk assessments and management
  • Experience of managing budgets, ensuring proper allocation of resource for initiatives, projects and ongoing monitoring
  • Experience of implementing and managing an environmental system such as ISO14001
  • Skilled in providing technical and operational advice on carbon reduction and energy efficiency to all stakeholders and monitor energy and water consumption in the portfolio of buildings
  • Organised, methodical, and able to work independently and collaboratively to meet performance targets
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the requirements and obligations of PAS 2035
  • Experience and knowledge of working within social housing or similar sectors
  • Knowledge of financial management, forecasting and modelling training or experience
