Job Purpose
Great Britain's electricity system is undergoing an ambitious, exciting, and vital transformation. Together with industry, we are creating a cleaner, greener system that protects the planet and serves future generations.
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) is taking on the new role of Regional Energy Strategic Planner. We will develop Regional Energy Strategic Plans (RESPs) for 11 regions across Great Britain, empowered through recent Ofgem decisions and ongoing consultations.
The Wales Energy Strategic Planning Lead will reflect regional characteristics and priorities, driving energy considerations across all vectors, including renewables, heat decarbonisation, hydrogen, energy networks, transport, and flexibility. This role requires a Wales-based team to collaborate with regional and central teams for effective energy planning, initially home-based until regional hubs open, with travel to Warwick/Wokingham as needed.
Developing the Wales RESP involves working with local organisations, including local government and energy networks, to understand infrastructure needs and attract investment. Stakeholder engagement is key to successful regional energy planning.
This is the first regional presence in Wales, and you will be instrumental in establishing and initiating energy planning within your region. As the team expands, you may oversee up to three team members.
The role includes leading aspects of the Wales RESP, engaging stakeholders, maintaining cross-team collaboration, deputising for your manager, and managing work packages. Understanding and lived experience of Wales are essential.
Our immediate focus is to build trust with stakeholders, establish processes and methodologies, and enhance our capability in whole energy systems to support local actors and industry in developing credible net-zero plans.

As NESO, we will expand our roles and capabilities across electricity, natural gas, and hydrogen, considering trade-offs for a sustainable, affordable, and secure energy system.
We aim to shape energy use and consumption for future generations.
