Job description

Job Title: Power System Design Lead

Location: Isle of Wight – Cowes. We offer hybrid and flexible working arrangements – please speak to your recruiter about the options for this particular role.

Salary: Circa £75,000, commensurate with skills and experience.

Put yourself into a dynamic Power System Design Lead role at the forefront of real-world demands in the defence industry. Alongside ensuring operational excellence for our existing products, there will be opportunities to develop next-generation radar products to counter emerging threats and contribute to our strategy for new technology. Your day-to-day will be exciting and diverse, applying the principles of Systems Engineering across the entire development lifecycle as you help develop radar systems used by those who serve and protect us.

What you’ll be doing:
  1. Design of AC & DC power and distribution systems, including sizing, protection, control, and the specification of power supplies and converters. This includes designing and specifying electrical supply systems from 440V AC to circuit board voltage rails.
  2. Designing motor drives, control, and positioning systems, managing EMC and verification processes.
  3. Specifying bespoke hardware and managing associated sub-contractor development programs.
  4. Verifying designs through simulation, analysis, and testing, including support for EMC testing and customer installations.
  5. Generating design documentation and technical reports, providing Electrical Engineering expertise to the project team.
  6. Adhering to the Engineering Lifecycle and contributing to progress, peer reviews, and design reviews.
Your Skills and Experiences:
  • Degree or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or a related field.
  • Expertise in electrical power systems design, including AC to DC conversion, distribution, regulation, and conditioning, with knowledge of linear and switch-mode supplies.
  • Familiarity with Electrical Safety Standards and EMC qualification to DEF STAN 59-411.
  • Experience with modelling tools such as Matlab/Simulink and awareness of SysML is beneficial.
  • Ability to gather evidence supporting acceptance, legislative compliance, and safety.
  • A rigorous approach to safety concerning high power/high voltage equipment.
