Main duties of the job

Educational Lead GP

Clinical sessions

The Educational Lead GP role is a hybrid of Lead GP clinical sessions with protected time to oversee the management and development of the Training Hub.

Lead GPs take a key role in being a visible lead to the clinical team to enable the provision of high quality and patient-centred clinical care within the surgeries. The appointment template varies at the different surgeries, but all GPs are expected to provide care for urgent and routine consultations through a mix of face to face consultations, telephone consultations, visits and sharing in the work of the duty team. Clinical sessions should take place at the surgery unless there are exceptional circumstances. Lead GPs will be responsible for a fair share distribution of admin (be this related to their list or where it is distributed equally amongst those present) and will carry a patient list size pro rata for the number of sessions they are working.

Clinical leadership/quality improvement session

Lead GPs provide senior clinical leadership to their practice team in addition to the provision of clinical sessions. We recognise that developing expertise in clinical and non-clinical areas brings benefit to patients, the practices and NCPC as well as providing job satisfaction.

The Educational Lead GP will play a central role in delivering high-quality patient care whilst helping to train and inspire the next generation of General Practitioners as part of their leadership speciality.

We will work with you to identify realistic goals for the Training Hub, identify the resources needed and provide the support required to implement them.

Whatever the area our Lead GPs lead in, the emphasis will be on improving patient care and contributing to the development of efficient and effective teams, including our established clinical and student teams.

Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Responsibilities

In accordance with the agreed job plan, the Educational Lead GP will make him/her-self available to undertake a variety of duties including:

Surgery consultations, telephone consultations, telephone triage, visiting patients

Participate in the duty doctor rota

Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, whether self-referred or referred from other health care workers within the organisation

Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signs of illness

Cover all the clinical management of the patients in surgery as appropriate including initiating investigations, reviewing results, making referrals to secondary care or to other providers as appropriate

Developing care and treatment plans in consultation with patients and in line with current Practice disease management protocols as well wider guidance such as that from NICE

Ensuring appropriate follow up of patients

Recording clear and contemporaneous computerised consultation notes to agreed standards

Prescribing generically whenever appropriately and in accordance with the CCG and Practice prescribing formulary, NICE guidance and Good Prescribing Practice (as defined by British National Formulary guidance)

Manage clinical administration in a timely fashion. This will include dealing with tasks, laboratory results, dealing with medication queries, processing clinical documentation, paperwork and correspondence in a timely fashion.

Provide clinical supervision to GP Registrars/F2/Medical Students

Provide clinical supervision to other members of the clinical team eg ANPs/ACPs)/practice nurses. Comply with all the objectives of the QOF targets, CCG initiatives, nationally or locally commissioned enhanced services.

Completion of reports for solicitors, insurance companies and other third parties

Working with and supporting other members of the primary health care team in delivering high quality primary care

Take an active role in delivering clinical governance

Promote preventative health care and advice where appropriate

Support and oversee the operational and educational development of the GP Training

Support and supervise trainee doctors working within the practice environment

Manage time efficiently to provide support for all student clinical sessions

Contribute to a unique and evolving training model for the Training Hub

Work collaboratively with experienced clinicians to create an exceptional educational experience

Contribute to innovation in primary care education within West Cumbria
