Job summary

Sense Education is seeking a dedicated Education Support Worker for its Sense College in Peterborough. The role is fixed-term until July 2027, 28 hours across Wed-Fri, with a broad timetable of educational activities for learners with complex needs.

The role requires teamwork, initiative, and experience with sensory impairment or learning disabilities. Training in BSL/Makaton is available. DBS checks and a supportive environment are provided.

Qualifications

  • Experience with sensory impairments, autism or learning disabilities is advantageous, training provided.
  • Able to work effectively as part of a team while using own initiative.
  • Experience with person-centred planning, keeping records up to date and providing personal care.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver services to people with multiple needs using Sense approaches.
  • Contribute to Individual Learning Plans and monitoring progress.
  • Represent the college at external professional development events for Support Workers.

Could you be a Sense Education Support Worker?

We now have anopportunity for an Education Support Workerto join our Sense College in Peterborough.

This is a fixed-term position, due to end in July 2027, working 28 hours a week across three days, Wednesday to Friday 9.15am - 4.15pm. Our college is open Monday to Friday for 38 weeks of the year.

We use a total communication approach which includes a variety of methods such as BSL / Sign Supported English / On Body Signing / Intensive Interaction /Pictorial Symbols and Symbol Systems (PECS) / Hand Under Hand Exploration / Objects of Reference / Voice Output Communication Aids / Vocalisation, Facial Expression and Body Language

Our timetabled activities, both in house and accessed at other local facilities, ensure the interests of the individual can be explored and used to motivate while encouraging learning opportunities. We celebrate and promote the diverse nature of our learners, embracing fundamental values, whilst encouraging a culture of mutual respect and tolerance. Sessions include Communication , Creative Arts, Therapies & physical activities, Life skills and Community Access.

  • Maintaining a Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
  • Representing the college at external professional development events for Support Workers.
  • Contributing to Individual Learning Plans/ targets and monitoring progress of these.
  • Playing a key role in ongoing assessment of learners
  • To provide a customised, responsive and high quality service to people with multiple sensory impairments, physical and/or learning disabilities who use Sense services.
  • To deliver services which meet or exceed organisational expectations and standards.

Your required skills and experiences:

  • Previous experience of working with people who have a sensory impairment, autism or learning disability would be an advantage, as would knowledge of BSL, Makaton or other methods of communication however, training will be provided.
  • It is essential that you are able to work effectively as part of a team whilst demonstrating your own initiative. You will have had experience of person centred planning, keeping records up to date and providing personal care.
  • Level 2 (or equivalent) in English and Maths is an essential requirement for this role.
