Job Description:

DescriptionEmployerLocation

Size of Wales is a charity that is making Wales part of the global solution to climate change. For decades, the “size of Wales” was used as a unit of measurement for the destruction of our most precious natural habitats. Since 2010, we have brought our nation together to turn this on its head.

Salary: £28,737 gross pro rata (£17,242 on a 3 day a week basis or £11,495 on a 2 day a week basis) plus expenses and travel costs. Size of Wales is a Living Wage employer.

Location: Home based in Mid or North Wales with frequent visits to schools in Mid and North Powys, Ceredigion or South Gwynedd (tbc dependent on candidates location).

Contract and hours: Part time 2 or 3 days a week. Permanent contract subject to renewal of funding. Size of Wales has a flexible working and TOIL policy.

Pension: Size of Wales offers a 6% pension contribution.

Annual leave: 22 days plus bank holidays (pro rata) rising to 27 days plus bank holidays (pro rata) after one year.

Together, we:

(i) work with Indigenous and local communities worldwide to protect at least 2 million hectares of tropical forests - an area the size of Wales and grow millions of trees.

(ii) educate and inspire people in Wales, especially young people, to recognise the critical role tropical forests play in tackling the climate and nature emergency and how we must support Indigenous and local communities to protect the climate, biodiversity, and livelihoods.

(iii) campaign to drive policy change and call for Wales to become the world’s first Deforestation Free Nation to protect tropical forests overseas.

Our vision is to help create a future where forest communities can thrive alongside healthy tropical forests - to make our nation part of the solution rather than a measure of the problem.

The Education Outreach Officer is at the front line of climate change, inspiring the future leaders of tomorrow and helping to shape an innovative and impactful charity. They will be responsible for delivering our exciting and popular climate change education programme in schools through the medium of Welsh. They will plan and deliver fun and inspiring workshops about the importance of tropical forests for pupils of all ages.

The ideal candidate will be a passionate and engaging practitioner with experience of working within the education system in Wales. They must be a fluent Welsh speaker and have an interest in the importance of tropical forests and climate change and be willing to undertake further training on these topics.

Responsibilities:

  • Developing engaging and age appropriate indoor and outdoor workshops on tropical forests and climate change, to be delivered in schools
  • Promoting the education programme and building strong relationships with schools
  • Gathering data from schools for monitoring and evaluation purposes and writing case studies on action taken by pupils and schools on climate change, as a result of our engagement.
  • Staying up to date with relevant developments in education, the Welsh curriculum and other environmental education and youth engagement programmes, especially in Wales
  • Staying up to date with key developments on climate change and tropical forests
  • Working closely with the Education Manager, Regional Education Manager and other education outreach officers to develop workshop content and develop new initiatives
  • Representing Size of Wales at some events and conferences
  • Willingness to embody equity, diversity and inclusion principles

You will be a welcomed team member, regularly engaging in team meetings and events, contributing to the organisational development of the charity and furthering your continued professional development in line with your role and beyond.
