Purpose of the post

Our Education and Employability project is expanding into North Wales, and this role will establish a consistent Welsh Refugee Council presence across the region, working closely with our internal Move On and Widening of Dispersal services, plus key local partners.

While our South Wales model focuses on delivering direct employability coaching and assessing clients for participation in Welsh Refugee Council programmes, the North Wales approach will be centred on identifying and engaging refugee and asylum-seeking communities across North Wales. This will be followed by building trusted communication channels and ensuring individuals are aware of, and able to access, existing education, training, employability and professional development opportunities available locally and nationally.

This will include supporting access to employment programmes, apprenticeships, further and higher education, vocational training, volunteering opportunities and specialist career pathways. The role will also facilitate workshops and events with external partners, covering topics such as entrepreneurship, self-employment, green careers, and professional re-accreditation. In addition, the postholder may work collaboratively with employers, training providers and other stakeholders to develop targeted work programmes with direct hiring opportunities.

The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening employability and education provision for sanctuary seekers across North Wales, helping individuals to develop their skills, realise their potential and progress towards sustainable employment and economic inclusion.

The ideal candidate will be:
  • A strong communicator with stakeholders & partners
  • Well-organised and able to create clear, accessible schedules & calendars
  • Comfortable with databases, computers and IT systems
  • Approachable and patient with clients
  • Interested in academia and adopting new work-based approaches

In return, you’ll receive a decent salary, and very generous annual leave allowance. You’ll have opportunities to try out new ways of working and make changes to the way we work.

Major duties and responsibilities

Outreach and engagement:

  • Identify and engage with refugee and sanctuary-seeking communities across North Wales.
  • Develop and maintain effective communication channels to promote education, training and employment opportunities to communities who may otherwise not be aware of the possibilities.
  • Build trusted relationships with community leaders, local groups and partner organisations.
  • Attend community events, outreach sessions and partner meetings across North Wales to identify emerging needs and opportunities.
  • Develop innovative approaches to engaging individuals who are not currently accessing mainstream employability and education services.
Education and employability support:
  • Register individuals for our Education and Employability programme, noting down language skills, former work experience and existing qualifications.
  • Provide information, guidance and signposting on progression routes into education, employment and professional development.
  • Identify specialist pathways for individuals with professional qualifications, supporting access to reaccreditation, bridging programmes and sector-specific support.
  • Work with clients to identify aspirations, barriers and development goals, supporting progression towards sustainable employment and integration outcomes.
Stakeholder engagement and workshop delivery:
  • Establish and maintain relationships with employers, colleges, universities, training providers, local authorities and third sector organisations across North Wales.
  • Promote the skills, experiences and contributions of refugees and asylum seekers to employers and strategic partners.
  • Represent the Welsh Refugee Council at partnership meetings, networks and events relevant to education, skills and employability in North Wales.
  • Design, coordinate and deliver workshops that improve employability, confidence and understanding of the UK labour market.
  • Organise group activities and information sessions that connect sanctuary seekers with employers, training providers and professional networks.
  • Work collaboratively with employers to create direct hiring opportunities for sanctuary seekers.
  • Work closely with the Welsh Refugee Council's Move On service, Welsh Sanctuary Service partners, particularly BAWSO, the British Red Cross and other key frontline support organisations to understand the needs of our clients.
  • Build strong working relationships with local Jobcentre Plus branches and organisations delivering the DWP "Restart" programme.
  • Share knowledge, opportunities and best practice with the wider Education and Employability team.
  • Participate in internal team meetings, service development activities and organisational projects as required.
Monitoring, reporting and administration:
  • Maintain accurate and timely records on the organisation's case management system.
  • Collect and report data on engagement, participation and progression outcomes against agreed project targets.
  • Produce case studies, success stories and outcome reports that demonstrate the impact of the project.
  • Contribute to funding reports, service evaluations and the continuous improvement of the project.
  • Ensure all work is delivered in accordance with organisational policies, GDPR requirements and safeguarding procedures.
