About the school:

As far back as 1755 there is strong evidence to suggest that one of the earliest schools in the Parish was situated close to the old Avonbank works in Millheugh. This school was provided by the village and was known as a ’Penny School’. Parents would each pay one penny a year to have their child educated there. Later after the Education (Scotland) Act of 1872 several new schools were built in Larkhall. The school built on Millheugh Brae was called Glengowan Primary School.

The Academy Street Years.

Glengowan Primary remained in the Millheugh building until 1974 when plans were made to demolish the old building.
Glengowan Primary then moved into the imposing red sandstone building in Academy Street which was built in 1866 and had been used as a primary school, Union Street Primary and as part of Larkhall Academy.
