Job description

This is not the usual education job. Apply if you have a knack for making learning fun, a keen interest in technology, and a passion for equity in education.

We are an EdTech non-profit working for marginalised children. We’re a small team with a can-do attitude and a big global impact.

In 2019, our software onecourse was announced co-winner of the $15 million Global Learning XPRIZE, following a 15-month field trial with out-of-school children in Tanzania. Over 1.5 million children across 17 countries are now learning with our software, including in Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Indonesia and Malawi, where the Ministry of Education is scaling it to every primary school in the country.

We are constantly striving to improve our software, and we’re now looking for the right person (rather than the right CV) to help us deliver greater learning gains and joyful engagement, and ensure we make the most of children’s precious learning time.

The right candidate will have an interest in EdTech and education, and must be comfortable challenging the status quo in order to contribute to onebillion’s goals.

onebillion

Our goal is for all children to have the knowledge and passion that enables them to create, innovate and become problem solvers, whether that’s within their local communities, nationally or internationally. But first, they need the basics.

We are a non-profit based in London, building software to transform children’s learning in reading, writing and numeracy. All in their own language, at their own pace, and with a holistic focus on early childhood development skills. We work with partners, communities, and ministries of education to implement and scale technology-based learning initiatives that deliver results for children, whatever their needs.

onecourse

The aim of onecourse is to bring children from being unable to recognise a letter or number to confidently literate and numerate. The study zone – made up of thousands of learning units – takes children through lessons and stories at their own level, before they have time to explore the play zone and library of 250+ stories. Children work alone in 20- to 40-minute sessions, while teachers can find resources, including onetest, in the teacher zone.

The role

We want to ensure that the time children spend using onecourse has the greatest possible impact on their learning, and that teachers recognise the software’s value as a tool to enhance their teaching and bring inclusive, engaging and effective learning to their students.

We’re looking for the very best talent to join our content team – someone who will absorb our philosophy and approach to learning, work collaboratively with the rest of our content team, and develop an understanding of the varied needs of the child.

This role will primarily be focused on the child-centred software, although it will also likely involve development of some teacher- or caregiver-focused digital resources to support the child’s wider learning.

Responsibilities

You will:

  • Develop an in depth knowledge of onecourse and the pedagogy and principles underpinning its design
  • Develop a deep understanding and appreciation of onebillion’s goals and priorities, and work as part of the team to achieve them
  • Adapt aspriorities shift, helping to shape and deliver the content strategy
  • Create new activities and content to address particular learning objectives and individual learning needs, discussing with the team and briefing in-house developers and designers
  • Edit existing learning units within onecourse, based on internal and external feedback and a real understanding of the children we’re working with and for
  • Work with our Head of Localisation to develop activities and experiences into our current and future languages
  • Effectively communicate the pedagogy to external global partners
  • Use our in-house software and processes effectively

Experience

Experience in the following will be beneficial, but not essential:

  • Primary education, working with young children and/or primary education publishing
  • Best practice in literacy and numeracy pedagogy
  • Developing or commissioning digital education content / EdTech
  • Working with or developing content for children with special educational needs and disabilities
  • Project management or product development
  • Experience of our target contexts such as education in Sub-Saharan Africa

Skills and characteristics

The right candidate will be:

  • creative
  • efficient
  • happy working independently
  • happy to muck in to contribute to the team effort
  • happy to change direction, iterate and try something new to get it ‘right’
  • an excellent listener and communicator, and a quick learner
  • comfortable giving an alternative opinion where it’s important to achieve the goal
  • comfortable learning new software
  • confident using Excel / Google Sheets

And have a:

  • strong interest in equity in education and the opportunities (and risks) of EdTech
  • sensitivity for and understanding of cultural differences and similarities
  • basic understanding of software development, especially apps

Practical information

  • (Ideally) full time
  • (Ideally) starting August 2025
  • Hybrid working (2 days per week in our Fulham, London, office)
  • We’re open to receiving applications from candidates with varying levels of experience. As such, the salary is negotiable.
  • Potential for travel to support work, for example to Sub-Saharan Africa

Application

Send the following to jobs@onebillion.org no later than Monday 11th August:

  • CV (max. 2 pages)
