Job description

Permanent Field Engineer

Rochford, Essex – £40,000

The Field Engineer will be responsible for installation, commissioning, maintenance, repairs, servicing, rebuilding, and troubleshooting equipment. This role involves both planned and unplanned activities, including executing validation documents and undertaking site visits. The engineer will represent the company and must be an adaptable problem-solver. This is a traveling-based role, both domestically and internationally, and may involve the engineer working in the absence of the Field Service Engineering Manager.

Key Responsibilities:
Mechanical Assembly:
  • Assemble and test full machines and systems, including standard and custom machines (e.g., nitrogen purge, cryomills, blenders, hoists).
  • Perform mechanical assembly of sub-assemblies (e.g., gearboxes, chain drives, bearing housings).
  • Troubleshoot and offer solutions for repairs, maintenance, and troubleshooting at customer sites.
  • Participate in FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing) or Final Inspections of machinery before installation, when required.
Field Service Planning:
  • Ensure timely ordering of parts for repairs in collaboration with Purchasing and Project Managers.
  • Arrange necessary site equipment (e.g., skates, A-Frames, forklifts) and discuss cost responsibilities with customers.
  • Maintain and update site service and installation diaries, tracking engineer movements.
  • Coordinate with the Planning Manager to allocate appropriate resources for site visits.
  • Organize travel arrangements, including hotel reservations, flights, and visa requirements for all required staff.
  • Ensure flexibility in responding to urgent customer needs (e.g., breakdowns).
  • Submit timesheets, expenses forms, and receipts to Accounts promptly.
Engineering Standards & Documentation:
  • Ensure compliance with statutory and local Engineering standards.
  • Ensure all machinery documentation (e.g., FAT, SAT, IQ/OQ) is complete and correct to the project scope.
  • Verify that engineering drawings are accurate and up to date; communicate discrepancies to the Project Manager.
  • Complete and review Field Service Reports and ensure they are filed correctly in the Job Folder.
Quality, Health, Safety & Environment (QHSE):
  • Complete inspection and quality documents post-assembly, including site installation forms.
  • Write and review RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements) prior to installation visits.
  • Perform risk evaluations in different working environments (e.g., pharmaceutical, food industry).
  • Self-inspect completed work to ensure parts are present and assembly aligns with specifications.
  • Use the correct measuring and inspection equipment and document the results.
  • Maintain a clean and safe working area and ensure tools are securely stored.
  • Promote and enforce safety best practices and regulations.
Key Qualifications, Skills & Competencies:
  • Proficient in reading and understanding engineering drawings.
  • Basic electrical knowledge and understanding of pneumatics is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of hand tool usage.
  • Awareness of ISO 9000 Standard, quality control, and traceability.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong manual dexterity and good communication skills.
  • Experience using tool-room machinery such as drills, saws, lathes, and mills.
  • Previous experience in mechanical fitting and site work is desirable.
  • Background in engineering and manufacturing environments is beneficial.

Details:
  • Monday to Friday 40 hours a week, 8am-4pm.
  • A clean, full UK driving licence.
  • National and international travel essential (on average 2 weeks a month away).
  • Based locally in the Southend on Sea area.
