Commercial Management Trainee

Trainee Quantity Surveyor

Location: Exeter

We are looking to recruit a Management Trainee to join a commercial team with a Tier 1 building contractor, joining a team of like-minded professionals offering training and support to progress to a fully-fledged Quantity Surveyor.

As a Commercial Management Trainee, you will assist with the management of costs relating to construction projects to ensure the overall financial success of a project.

This involves calculating the amount and cost of materials needed for the building work and taking responsibility for the financial management of several sub-contractors (bricklayers, scaffolders, ground workers) across a construction project and manage the contractual/legal elements of a project.

You will be assisting with the above and learning the principles of cost management and negotiation, along with:

1. Analysing costs from initial stage to completion
2. Selecting and reviewing suppliers and sub-contractors
3. Becoming an expert in various forms of contract
4. Assisting with monthly reporting and contract administration
5. Liaising with the supply chain and clients
6. Procurement of suppliers
7. Site measurements, valuations, and payments

What you will need:

1. Either an HNC in a construction-related subject or a degree in a construction-related subject
2. Strong numeracy skills and the ability to learn costing IT packages / Excel
3. Ability to write clear and precise reports and present your findings
4. Self-motivated with the enthusiasm to learn and develop
5. Ability to take responsibility and be accountable
6. Attention to detail with the ability to meet deadlines
7. A full driving license as this will be office-based but visiting sites as and when required across the South West
