Job description

Binnies is recruiting ecologists with a focus on habitats and botanical surveys. We pride ourselves on being a sustainability-led organisation, and you would play a key role in maintaining our high standards. With the increasing importance of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and nature-based solutions, botanical expertise is critical for our projects.

You will have the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of projects, including nationally significant infrastructure and landscape-scale restoration. Our projects span flood, coastal, maritime sectors, ports, water utilities, transport, and renewable energy.

One of our recent projects is SESRO (South East Strategic Reservoir Option), a 150 million cubic metre reservoir near Abingdon, aimed at habitat creation and biodiversity enhancement. More details can be found at this link.

We offer flexible working arrangements, with offices in Redhill, Bradford on Avon/Bristol, Birmingham, or Chester.

Binnies is a registered Ecological (CIEEM) and Landscape Practice (Landscape Institute), holding the IEMA EIA Quality Mark, and sponsors the Association of Environmental Clerk of Works.

About the Role
  • Undertaking and managing habitat and botanical field surveys.
  • Preparing and reviewing ecological reports.
  • Mentoring ecologists, especially those interested in botany.
  • Designing habitat restoration and creation schemes, and developing management and monitoring plans.
  • Performing BNG calculations using the Statutory Biodiversity Metric and other client-specific tools.
  • Contributing to ecological deliverables such as BNG assessment reports, EcIA, planning documents, HRA, and other consents.

While we particularly seek ecologists interested in botany and habitats, opportunities exist to work on other species as well.

Qualifications/Requirements

Applicants should have at least 3 years of field experience and possess:

  • An ecological/environmental degree.
  • Membership or application in CIEEM.
  • At least FISC Level 3 botanical field skills.
  • Experience with UK habitats survey and BNG assessments.
  • Experience with BNG metrics.
  • Proven ability to write high-quality ecological reports.
  • A full UK driving license.
  • Willingness to work away from home as required.

Desirable skills include:

  • Protected species surveys.
  • Experience with ArcGIS or similar tools.
  • Consultancy experience.
  • Advanced botanical survey skills (e.g., NVC).
  • Preparing habitat management and monitoring plans.
  • Working towards chartered status as an ecologist or environmentalist.
