Job description

Following its recent acquisition by SLR, Wardell Armstrong now forms part of a leading global environmental and sustainability consultancy working on projects across the world from over 100 offices. To meet increased demand, we are looking to increase our junior staff numbers to cover site surveys across the North East. There are various positions available including permanent, full time, part time and casual/temporary.

Overview of team / business area

You will be joining a supportive team based in Leeds, with the option of hybrid/ flexible working. We have a strong team of over 200 ecologists distributed across the UK and Ireland. We support client projects within the renewable energy field (wind and solar farms, battery stores), infrastructure (road and rail) and commercial and residential development.

The role

  • Initially assist with and then independently undertake extended habitat surveys as your skills improve;
  • Assist experienced ecologists with protected species (e.g., great crested newt, bat, badger, and reptile) surveys, gaining experience towards protected species survey licences;
  • Assist and then independently write a variety of ecological reports, including for Biodiversity Net Gain;
  • Be exposed to the full breadth of ecological consultancy in a short time;
  • Gain insights into the planning system and infrastructure development in the UK;
  • Plan project management, including coordinating in-house and external technical teams.

About you

  • Have a genuine enthusiasm for wildlife and a willingness to develop new ecology field skills, including plant identification;
  • Hold a degree or equivalent in ecology or a related discipline;
  • Hold, or be working towards, ‘qualifying member’ status, or higher, of CIEEM;
  • Have a flexible approach to work, including frequent lone working, occasional unsocial hours (e.g., overnight bat surveys), and sometimes stays away from home (expenses paid);
  • Be able to work effectively as part of a team;
  • A full UK driving licence, and ideally access to your own vehicle.
