Job summary

Central Bedfordshire Council is seeking an Ecologist to join the Natural Environment team. This role provides ecological advice across planning applications and wider council activities to protect biodiversity and support sustainable development.

You will lead ecological surveys, advise on Biodiversity Net Gain and local plans, and represent the Council at external meetings. A degree in Ecology and planning-related experience are essential; professional body membership is desirable.

Qualifications

• Degree in Ecology or equivalent qualification with knowledge of ecological field survey techniques.
• Experience interpreting technical reports, legislation and policy and presenting clear, balanced advice.
• Experience providing technical ecology advice for planning applications is essential.
• Membership of a professional body such as CIEEM is desirable.

Responsibilities

• Comment on consultation responses on planning applications and other proposals with biodiversity impacts.
• Provide ecological advice to assist in development of policies within local plans and biodiversity initiatives.
• Undertake site visits and ecological surveys, including monitoring Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
• Represent the Council in external partnerships and provide expert witness input as required.
• Plan, co-ordinate and supervise related activity undertaken by third parties and volunteers.
