Job description

Our defence sector client, based near Salisbury in Wiltshire are seeking an experienced Ecologist to lead a comprehensive habitat condition assessment across a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Your expertise will directly inform future land management priorities, ensuring the protection and enhancement of this valuable ecological site. This is a 3 month contract offering up to £525 per day (Inside IR35).

Application Deadline: Tuesday 8th July at 12pm.
Clearance Requirements: BPSS, SC clearance is preferred.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct detailed habitat condition assessments across the SSSI, focusing on lowland calcareous grassland.
  • Apply Condition Status Monitoring (CSM) techniques accurately and consistently.
  • Manage medium to large-scale ecological projects with a focus on conservation outcomes.
  • Deliver conservation and ecology programmes, effectively engaging and managing volunteer teams.
  • Advise on and support habitat management techniques and best practice implementation.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation relating to SSSI, Special Protection Area (SPA), and Special Area of Conservation (SAC).
  • Support land management operations with an understanding of their ecological impact.

EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Proven experience managing medium to large-scale ecological projects.
  • Strong botanical identification skills, particularly with calcareous grassland species.
  • Experience applying CSM to lowland grassland habitats.
  • Demonstrated success delivering conservation programmes involving volunteers.
  • Sound knowledge of relevant legislation for SSSI, SPA, and SAC designations.
  • Practical understanding of land management operations and their ecological impacts.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Ecology or related field.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) preferred.
