Ecologist

Location: Leeds (Hybrid Remote)
Salary: £30,000 - £45,000 per annum (dependent on experience), plus benefits - 4 day week option available (pro-rata)
Contract: Full-time, permanent

Ecologist - The Role

We are looking for an experienced ecologist who is passionate about biodiversity and sustainability. This role requires strong technical report-writing skills and experience conducting baseline surveys, including Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) and Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEA).

Work Location:

Our office is based in Sheffield, but we welcome applications from ecologists living in or willing to relocate to the north of England. Flexible working arrangements are available, and we offer a co-working space in Sheffield. After a probationary period, remote working may be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct and manage baseline ecological surveys, including BNG, PEA, and species-specific surveys.
  2. Prepare and review technical ecological reports to a high standard, including BNG assessments, PEA reports, and habitat condition assessments.
  3. Support the Lead Ecologist in project delivery and manage ecological aspects of larger projects.
  4. Liaise with clients, landowners, developers, and local authorities to ensure high-quality ecological services.
  5. Apply expertise in UK habitat/conservation and protected species legislation to practical projects.

What we need from you:

Key Skills & Experience:

(Essential)

  1. Minimum 3 years' experience in the ecology sector, with strong report-writing skills.
  2. CIEEM membership (preferred).
  3. Strong knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), including statutory metrics and legislation.
  4. Experience conducting habitat and ecological surveys.
  5. Proficiency in QGIS and/or ArcGIS.
  6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  7. Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects.
  8. A degree in Ecology, Conservation, Land Management, or a related field.

(Desirable)

  1. Holding protected species licences (e.g., Bat, GCN, Schedule 1 birds).
  2. Experience in sustainable resource use, renewable energy, or agricultural services.
