Job summary

A well-established Tier 1 contractor is seeking an experienced Ecologist to support rail infrastructure projects across Scotland, specifically in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The role involves assessing ecological constraints, conducting surveys, and ensuring compliance with environmental legislation. Candidates should have a strong background in ecology, familiarity with relevant legislation, and the ability to contribute to biodiversity strategies. This position offers a daily rate of £500 for a contract duration of 6 months or more.

Ecologist

Location: Glasgow or Edinburgh

Rate: £500 per day (Inside IR35)

Contract Length: 6 Months +

Sector: Rail Infrastructure

We are currently seeking an experienced Ecologist to support Rail infrastructure projects across Scotland. Working closely with site teams, supervisors, and project managers, you will assess ecological constraints, ensure compliance with environmental legislation, and advise on mitigation strategies for biodiversity and protected species.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct and assess outputs from environmental and ecological surveys (e.g. Phase 1 Habitat Surveys, protected species assessments).

Carry out site visits to identify ecological risks and constraints along rail corridors, including under bridges and around infrastructure assets.

Determine whether protected species licences are required and manage the application process.

Provide expert advice on managing invasive species and protected habitats, such as:

• Japanese Knotweed
• Giant Hogweed
• Great Crested Newts
• Badgers and their setts

Requirements:

Proven experience working in ecology, ideally within a rail or linear infrastructure environment.

Familiarity with environmental legislation and licensing.

PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification or willingness to obtain it prior to site access.

Strong understanding of applying ecological mitigation and best practice in active rail environments.
