Job Description

The role of Senior Cyber Security Analyst is based in Cheltenham with a salary of £44,044 (including £2,658 non-concessionary payment). We offer flexible working arrangements, including full-time, part-time, and compressed hours, with around 40% home working possible depending on business needs.

About Us: GCHQ is an intelligence, cyber, and security agency focused on safeguarding the UK through advanced technology, partnerships, and analysis to counter threats like terrorism, cyber-attacks, and espionage. We promote a supportive, inclusive environment emphasizing teamwork.

The Role: As a Senior Cyber Security Analyst, you will protect the organization from various cyber threats such as malware, insider threats, DDoS attacks, and phishing. Your daily tasks include investigating alerts, analyzing logs and network traffic with tools like Splunk, monitoring security alarms, creating detection content, utilizing threat intelligence, and responding to breaches. You will lead process improvements, mentor junior analysts, and explore Digital Forensics and security incidents, contributing to the team's strategic direction and staying updated with the latest cybersecurity tools and techniques.

About You: You should have a background in cybersecurity analysis and IT, with experience in host intrusion detection preferred but not essential. You must understand Windows and Linux OS, with at least 6 months of experience as a Cyber Security or SOC Analyst. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively with IT teams are essential.

Training and Development: We support your growth through internal and external training, opportunities across cybersecurity specialisms, and industry qualifications like SANS and CISSP. Travel opportunities are available but not mandatory.

Rewards and Benefits: Starting salary of £44,044 plus benefits such as 25 days of annual leave (rising to 30 after 5 years), public holidays, performance recognition, season ticket loan, pension scheme, cycle-to-work scheme, on-site facilities, and parental leave.

Equal Opportunities: We value diversity and inclusion, encouraging applications from underrepresented groups, including women, minorities, disabled, and neurodivergent individuals. More info at our website.

We’re Disability Confident: GCHQ has Leader status in the DWP’s scheme, ensuring fair interview opportunities for disabled applicants meeting minimum criteria, which include 6 months of relevant experience, experience in malware analysis, intrusion detection, incident response, or team delegation.

What to Expect: Our recruitment process involves application review, virtual interviews, and a conditional offer. The process may take 6-9 months, including vetting, so continue current employment until final offer.

Before You Apply: Eligibility requires UK citizenship or dual nationality, with Developed Vetting security clearance. Consider setting up a separate, anonymous email for your application. The role is based in Cheltenham; relocation costs are not covered. Applications from outside the UK are not accepted. Discuss your application only with close contacts.

Right to Withdraw: We may close the application earlier once sufficient applications are received; apply promptly to avoid missing out.
