Overview: Located on the shores of the Menai Strait in North Wales, Bangor University's School of Ocean Sciences is a leading marine science department with extensive facilities and a seagoing research vessel. The staff conduct impactful research on global challenges like climate change and biodiversity loss.

The Project: The successful candidate will work on the UKRI-funded FisHistory project, which combines history, marine biology, and ecology to develop sustainable fisheries management strategies, focusing on historical and modern data related to herring fisheries in England and Wales.

Purpose of the Job: To conduct cross-disciplinary research on herring biology and fisheries, utilizing historical sources and spatial data, including stakeholder interviews, project management, and collaboration with colleagues across disciplines.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Gather and analyze data from historical records and scientific sources; conduct interviews; visualize and analyze spatial data.
  2. Contribute to publications, reports, and dissemination activities, including public engagement.
  3. Manage project data, organize meetings and workshops, maintain stakeholder engagement, and plan fieldwork.
  4. Coordinate with the postgraduate research assistant.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in performance reviews and development activities.
  • Adhere to university policies on equality, health and safety, and legal compliance.

Person Specification:

Qualifications/Training:

  • Essential: PhD or near completion in history, environmental history, archaeology, geography, marine biology, fisheries, ecology, or environmental sciences.
  • Desirable: Degrees in both humanities and sciences.

Experience/Knowledge:

  • Essential: Understanding of historical ecology; managing large datasets; integrating diverse data types.
  • Desirable: Publications; experience with historical sources, qualitative data, stakeholder engagement, and cross-disciplinary research.

Skills/Abilities:

  • Essential: GIS skills; initiative; communication; workload prioritization; computer skills.
  • Desirable: Research software proficiency; palaeography; project management; teamwork; valid driving license.
