Purpose of Position
Northern Kentucky University (NKU) seeks an academic advocate and transformative leader to serve as Vice Provost for Graduate Education, Research, and Outreach. We are highly engaged with our external partners and community and the new Vice Provost will participate in strategic planning in these spaces.
The three distinct, yet complementary, areas under the Vice Provost's purview come together to create a synergistic portfolio with exciting growth potential in all three areas. The next Vice Provost will champion each of these critical functions while deepening connections, seeing new possibilities, and helping launch new initiatives.
Primary Responsibilities
This is an exceptional opportunity to join the ambitious and creative leadership team of a university with great momentum that continues to be on the move.

The Vice Provost will be responsible for directing, advocating for, and strengthening education, research and outreach, and for imagining and pursuing new ways in which these critical functions can contribute to the University's mission. The new Vice Provost will work closely with the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, Instructional Excellence, and Online Programs, as our graduate programs currently enroll approximately 85% of our graduate students in online programs and the rest in traditional or hybrid formats. The Vice Provost will also provide guidance to the multiple centers and institutes on our campus, helping to coordinate our efforts.

As a key member of the Academic Affairs leadership team, the Vice Provost will influence University-wide initiatives as a key thought leader and a driver of transformational initiatives in the University and in the region.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the portfolio, ensuring alignment with the university's overall mission and strategic goals.

  • Lead the development and implementation of new graduate programs, research initiatives, and outreach activities, collaborating with academic units, faculty, the newly formed Norse Network Hub and external partners.

  • Lead efforts to strengthen and expand our outreach and community engagement as we grow our civic education efforts and numbers of community partners.

  • Build connections between units within the portfolio (e.g. Institute for Student Research and Creativity, Research, Grants and Contract, Scripts Howard Center for Civic Engagement) and units with the university and beyond to increase experiential learning opportunities for all levels of our students.

  • Promote and support research endeavors, including securing funding, fostering collaboration, and ensuring research integrity.

  • Promote a culture that prioritizes increasing grant-seeking activity of our faculty and staff through training, education, and other initiatives.

  • Lead the NKU research foundation board to support and encourage faculty and staff to seek opportunities to commercialize their intellectual property.

  • Develop policies that guide the research enterprise, our external engagement, and campus centers and institutes and ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with academic units, faculty, the Norse Network Hub, and external partners, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment.

  • Advocate for graduate education, research, and outreach within the university and externally, representing the university at regional, national, and international forums.
