Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesThe Ophthalmology Department at University Hospitals of Leicester provides general and specialist ophthalmic services to its 1.3 million adult and children patients registered with a general practice located within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR). It also services as a tertiary centre for some referrals from beyond the borders of LLR.
Overall, the ophthalmology department delivers over 100,000 clinical appointments to patients as well as providing surgery, injections, and an Eye Casualty service attending to 25,000 patients annually. We are a large department with 28 consultant ophthalmologists and our teams of doctors, nurses, optometrists, orthoptists, ophthalmic practitioners, photographers, clerical, and management staff.
The Ophthalmology Department has pioneered innovative new ways of working to meet the high service demand. These include services such as virtual clinics in many popular areas, such as medical retina and glaucoma, and allied healthcare professional running clinics and telephone or video consultations.
Person specificationQualificationsEssential criteria- MBBS or equiv.
- Full Registration with the GMC with a licence to practice
Desirable criteria- Within 6 months of registering for CCT from PMETB at the closing date.
ExperienceEssential criteria- Cornea experience and skills Similar to a trainee within 6 months of CCT
Desirable criteria- Wider experience of Cornea ophthalmology than expected of a trainee within 6 months of CCT.
Ability/ KnowledgeEssential criteria- Understanding of ophthalmic basic sciences and the ability to apply this to clinical practice
- Good basic knowledge of ophthalmology
Desirable criteria- Previous publications demonstrating in depth understanding of clinical problems, audit or research.
Clinical skillsEssential criteria- Ability to evaluate routine cases and interpret basic investigations
- Awareness of constraints, risks and potential complications of management
- Ability to record accurate and complete medical notes
Desirable criteria- Appropriate delegation of clinical and administrative tasks
Teaching skillsEssential criteria- Evidence of experience of, and enthusiasm for, teaching others
MotivationEssential criteria- Commitment to Cornea Ophthalmology

The Trust will pay for the check initially and the money will then be deducted from your salary over a three month period commencing on your first month's payment.
The current price of a check is £38 for an enhanced and £18 for a standard check.
