Job description

Appointment of Two Non-Executive Directors

The St George’s, Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Group (gesh) is one of the largest and most complex healthcare providers in the country, serving a population of approximately 3.5 million across South West London and Surrey. Formed as a strategic partnership between St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, the Group combines world-class specialist services with vital district general hospital care. With a workforce of over 17,000 dedicated staff, gesh is committed to delivering safe, high-quality and compassionate care, reducing health inequalities, and improving outcomes for the diverse communities they serve.

They are now seeking two outstanding individuals to join their Board of Directors as Non-Executive Directors (NEDs). Both of these roles will be appointed to the Board of St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and under their 'NED in Common' approach, at least one of these appointment, and potentially both, will also serve on the Board of Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the leadership and governance of a major hospitals group delivering high-quality, inclusive healthcare services to a diverse population across South West London, Surrey and beyond.

Non-Executive Director – Finance Background

For this role, they are particularly seeking candidates with a senior financial leadership and management background who ideally hold an ACA or equivalent qualification. Candidates who have experience working in a senior finance role at Board level within central government departments, agencies or large public sector organisations would be particularly welcome.

Non-Executive Director – Clinical Leadership Background

They are also seeking to appoint a Non-Executive Director with a strong clinical leadership and management background. This could include senior leaders from medical, nursing, midwifery, allied health professions or clinical academia who have operated at Board level and can bring insights into the management of complex hospital-based care, champion clinical quality and safety, support the delivery of transformational change across the care pathways, and assist the Board in seeking assurance on the safety and quality of the services they provide.

Both Trusts are committed to building Boards that reflects the communities they serve. They encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, particularly those groups who are underrepresented on their Boards including women, individuals from Black and minority ethnic communities, disabled individuals and people with experience relevant to the NHS and communities they serve. They are especially keen to meet candidates who can strengthen visible and cognitive diversity on their Board.

What They’re Looking For

Successful candidates will have recent Board-level experience in large and complex organisations, a strong commitment to gesh values, and the ability to provide strategic challenge and seek assurance. Non-Executive Directors are expected to bring independent judgement, promote high standards of integrity and transparency, and actively contribute to a positive and inclusive organisational culture.

Time Commitment and Remuneration

This role requires a commitment of up to 4 days per month. The appointment is for an initial term of up to three years, renewable subject to performance. Candidates who are appointed as NEDs in Common across the gesh Group will receive remuneration of £22,000 per annum. Remuneration for appointment as a NED at St George’s only is £17,000per annum.
