Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated senior Clinical Scientist to lead our Magnetic Resonance and Ultrasound Physics Team. The successful candidate will be an experienced scientist, with previous experience of leading or supporting leading teams. We ae looking for a Scientist registered as an MRSE, with previous experience in U/S and interest in developing both MRI and U/S governance. We are committed to providing our patients with outstanding care and seek a clinical scientist who shares this vision.
The MRI and US team is a friendly and dedicated team who work hard to engage with Imaging throughout the organisation to ensure the safety of staff, patients and visitors to the Trust. The team are involved with all aspects of MRI equipment life cycle and developing support of U/S scanners (~400 items). There is a strong commitment to innovation, research and development and existing links with Queen Mary University, King's College Hospital and other Academic Trusts in the London Region.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the post is to undertake the leadership of the Magnetic Resonance (MR) and Ultrasound (U/S) Physics team.

The post holder will be responsible for the provision of MR and U/S Physics services to the Trust and the management of the associated staff.

Provision of scientific and technical support to all MRI and U/S systems within the Trust(St Bartholomew Hospital, Royal London Hospital, Whipps Cross, Newham University Hospital and Mile End CDC) and any additional systems under external contract. Ensure the optimisation and safe clinical use of MRI system in several specialties, principally diagnostic imaging and oncology.

The postholder will lead scientific MRI and U/S research in the Trustl and undertake collaborative work with associated academic institutions. In collaboration with consultant medical practitioners and leading academics, undertake the implementation of innovative leading-edge clinical MR methods and U/S diagnostic techniques.

The postholder will initiate and provide high quality teaching and training of junior clinical scientists within the national training programs and support the training of Trust staff in the safe use of MRI systems.

The postholder will act as the lead MR Safety Expert (MRSE) to the Trust

  • Line management experience with a significant period of responsibility for scientific and/or technical staff

  • Demonstrable evidence of understanding and experience of professional leadership.
  • Proven experience of building and working in partnership with both internal and external stakeholders.

  • In depth understanding of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines in MRI and U/S Physics
  • Highly advanced theoretical and practical expert knowledge of MRI Physics and extensive experience in the field of MRI This includes the knowledge required to act as lead MRSE in a complex Trust
  • Highly specialised knowledge of clinical issues and their implications for internal radiation dosimetry purposes
  • Knowledge of U/S Physics and principles of Clinical U/S guidance
  • High level of understanding of patient and staff risks arising from equipment failure and staff error
  • High Level of understanding of Risk Assessment and Risk Management processes and techniques with significant experience in carrying these out
