Job Description:

Newcastle University is a great place to work, with excellent benefits. We have a generous holiday package; plus the opportunity to buy more, great pension schemes and a number of health and wellbeing initiatives to support you.

Closing Date: 28 May 2025

The Role

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Associate in Health Technology Assessment (HTA) and modelling with strong quantitative skills to take a lead in the delivery of two prestigious programmes: the Newcastle NIHR Technology Assessment Group and the NICE External Assessment Group.

The successful candidate will lead and develop technology appraisals across the Medicines, Diagnostics, and MedTech landscape. This role offers an exciting opportunity for individuals with experience in all aspects of HTA, including critical review of the clinical and economic components of company technology assessment reports, conducting network meta-analyses, matching-adjusted indirect comparisons, evaluation and analysis of real-world evidence, and economic evaluations through de novo economic models.

The post-holder will work across two successful research groups, the Health Economics Group and the Evidence Synthesis Group, within the Population Health Sciences Institute at Newcastle University. These groups jointly hold the contracts for the two HTA programmes of work.

Responsibilities will include supervising early-career researchers, developing funding proposals, analysis plans, leading applied methodological research projects, and developing short courses. Opportunities to contribute to teaching are also available.

The post is full-time, fixed term until 31 March 2027 in the first instance.

To apply, please attach your CV and a cover letter demonstrating how you meet the essential criteria outlined in the Person Specification of the Job Description. All documents should be included within the same file, with a maximum size of 10MB.

Key Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the leadership of the TAR programme, delivered by a multidisciplinary team of researchers mainly from the Health Economics Group and the Evidence Synthesis Group.
  • Support delivery of the TAR and EAG contracts for NICE by reviewing evidence submissions; systematic reviewing; evaluating cost-effectiveness of health technologies; developing decision models; and conducting evidence synthesis methods such as network meta-analysis and matching-adjusted indirect comparisons.
  • Maintain academic standards and adhere to university policies (e.g., equal opportunities, health and safety).
  • Attract research funding from peer-reviewed external sources.
  • Plan and lead high-quality research, manage projects, supervise research teams, and ensure research milestones are met.
  • Publish research in peer-reviewed journals at a 3* level, with significant contributions at the 4* level.
  • Contribute to teaching activities related to health technology assessment at postgraduate and undergraduate levels.
  • Ensure data management complies with research governance and data protection legislation.
  • Engage in professional development activities, including training in research methods and transferable skills.
  • Participate in activities of the Health Economics and Evidence Synthesis Groups.
  • Perform administrative tasks to support the Population Health Sciences Institute as required.
