Job description

Salary: up to £46,000

Job type: Permanent, full time

Location: Helensburgh (site-based) with occasional travel to other UK sites (overnight stays sometimes required)

The role

A safety-critical operator is looking to appoint an EC&I Technician to support a busy fuel storage/terminal environment. You’ll take ownership of reactive and planned maintenance across essential electrical and control systems, helping keep assets safe, compliant, and available.

This role covers a broad range of equipment including electrical distribution, motors, drives, switchgear, MCC/control panels, instrumentation and associated control systems. You’ll also provide first-line maintenance support for the site’s BPCS (Basic Process Control System) and related hardware.

While the position is primarily site-based in Scotland, you may be asked to support other UK locations from time to time, so a full UK driving licence is required.

Overtime may be available during weekdays and weekends (not mandatory).

Key responsibilities
  • Deliver day-to-day electrical maintenance and technical support to operations in a high-hazard environment.
  • Diagnose faults, carry out effective repairs, and document work completed to the required standard.
  • Complete routine inspections and checks across electrical systems, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and standards.
  • Work safely and efficiently on both planned preventative maintenance and breakdown maintenance, including troubleshooting and defined repair scopes.
  • Support compliance with site rules and best practice for hazardous areas and safety-critical work (e.g., COMAH/DSEAR/EAWR/HASAWA where applicable).
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and contractors; where required, supervise other operatives and take responsibility for job completion.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying recurring issues and proposing practical solutions.

Training will be provided where there are skills gaps, including on any site-specific instrumentation or maintenance systems.

About you

You’ll be a qualified engineering technician with a recognised apprenticeship (or equivalent structured training) and strong hands‑on EC&I experience. You’re calm under pressure, methodical in fault‑finding, and committed to safe working and high‑quality workmanship—especially in reactive situations where time and safety are critical.

You should have a solid working understanding of:

  • National Working Rules (electrical industry)
  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
  • Electrical installation inspection/testing practices and certification

Medical/fitness requirements: Must be medically fit for Breathing Apparatus and Confined Space training/operations and have full colour vision.
