Job Title: Communications Officer

The communications officer will deliver customer communications for major engineering work, special events, and activities affecting train services. This role is vital for informing customers who rely on our services, impacting their travel experience.

The officer will support the external communications team with daily press office operations and campaigns, and provide support to other SWR functions.

Responsibilities include liaising with internal teams and external stakeholders such as Network Rail, planning and executing customer communication campaigns across various channels, and supporting projects led by the external communications team and wider Corporate Affairs.

Main duties include:

  1. Executing customer communications campaigns via digital channels and stations, especially regarding engineering works and service changes.
  2. Reporting on campaign effectiveness and identifying improvements.
  3. Representing the team in meetings and collaborating with various departments.
  4. Liaising with industry partners and reviewing communications related to the network.
  5. Maintaining a calendar of engineering works for timely communications.
  6. Managing communications during train service disruptions.
  7. Creating and updating customer materials like website copy, emails, and posters.
  8. Supporting other projects with communications activities.
  9. Assisting in executing the external communications strategy.
  10. Managing press office operations, including reporting and system management, including out of hours work every eight weeks.
  11. Supporting press materials development such as releases, photos, and videos.
Candidate Requirements:
  • Degree-level education or equivalent.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in a communications role and working with customers.
  • Stakeholder management experience.
  • Ability to build relationships internally and externally.
  • Commercial awareness and customer focus.
  • Project management skills, ability to meet tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work under pressure and independently or in a team.
  • Understanding of the railway industry is preferred.
Location & Working Pattern:

South Western Railways HQ, located on the 4th Floor at South Bank Central, near Waterloo station, accessible by public transport.

Standard hours are 37 per week, 09:00 - 17:00, Monday to Friday, with an out-of-hours on-call duty approximately every 7/8 weeks.
