Job description

We’re looking for a Senior Cloud Architect to join us and drive the evolution of our cloud infrastructure, designing and implementing cutting-edge solutions that support our mission to protect consumers and accelerate Net Zero.

Ofgem is Great Britain’s independent energy regulator. We’re at the forefront of change across the energy sector, driving toward Net Zero whilst protecting energy consumers—especially vulnerable people.

We’re offering a fixed-term contract (1 year) with the flexibility to work from London, Glasgow, or Cardiff, providing a unique opportunity to shape and enhance cloud solutions that power critical regulatory functions. In this role, you’ll lead the design and implementation of scalable, secure, and high-performing cloud solutions, ensuring they align with business objectives while adhering to best practices in cybersecurity and compliance.

You’ll collaborate with cross-functional teams, senior leaders, and key stakeholders to develop robust cloud architectures, leveraging technologies such as Azure Machine Learning, API management, and integration with PowerPlatform. Your expertise will be instrumental in building resilient, future-proof cloud environments that support data-driven decision-making and innovation across Ofgem.

We’re looking for someone with extensive experience in designing and deploying cloud technologies, particularly within Microsoft Azure, and a proven track record of optimising cloud services for scalability, security, and efficiency. You’ll be highly skilled in cloud networking, integration services, and automation, with a strong ability to translate business needs into technical solutions.

As a Senior Cloud Architect, you will play a pivotal role in driving technical excellence and delivering innovative cloud solutions that power Ofgem’s vision for the future.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design Azure Cloud solutions, ensuring scalability, reliability, and security.
  • Architect virtual networks (VNets), gateways, and other networking components.
  • Design the integration of Azure services such as Service Bus, Event Grid, Synapse, Blob Storage, Function Apps, and Azure Monitor.
  • Design the integration of the PowerPlatform ecosystem with the existing Common Data Platform.
  • Develop solutions using Azure Machine Learning, Function Apps, and Logic Apps.
  • Oversee API management and authentication processes.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and implement cloud strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards and best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior team members.

Key Outputs and Deliverables

  • Artefacts which address business need and align to the data strategy and architectural vision of data in Ofgem.
  • Deliver reference libraries with a focus on re-usability in order to accelerate impending data projects.
  • Produce standards and principles which ensure a consistent and coherent approach to data architecture throughout the organisation.
  • Develop the approach and processes required to deliver effective oversight of data architecture within Ofgem.
  • Data flows into and out of the organisation are mapped and exposed in a manner which fosters discovery and traceability of data.
Person specification
  • Experience designing, deploying, and servicing modern cloud data technologies with a secure and cost-effective design (e.g. Azure services including VNets, gateways, Service Bus, Event Grid, Synapse, Blob Storage, Azure Monitor, Azure Machine Learning, Function Apps, API management, authentication, and Logic Apps) to deliver a resilient and scalable platform. (Lead criteria)
  • Demonstrable experience in data technologies and development processes best practices. (Lead criteria)
  • Active Microsoft Certification AZ-305.
  • Experience monitoring impact, service quality or value delivered from work, platform and service.
  • Experience prioritising development time, effort or financial resource across a portfolio of work.
  • Experience designing, deploying, and servicing modern cloud data technologies (e.g. Microsoft PowerBI, Microsoft PowerApps, Microsoft PowerPages, Microsoft PowerAutomate service) to deliver a flexible, resilient and scalable solution.
  • Clear written and verbal communication at a senior management level.
  • Experience of translating business requirements in technical requirements and vice-versa.
