What will I be doing as a Chemical Laboratory Technician apprentice?

Under supervision, you'll conduct testing on raw materials to assess suitability for manufacturing and on finished products to ensure they meet specifications. You'll work closely with the manufacturing team to ensure laboratory results are reproducible on the production line and that any issues are resolved.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Operate laboratory and pilot machinery, such as mixing and press-moulding equipment, to produce formulations that meet quality, quantity, and time requirements.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing problems and design/perform experiments to address these issues.
  • Characterize materials and composites.
  • Assist in developing new formulations and manufacturing technologies under supervision.
  • Record observations and communicate results to project leaders.
  • Test incoming raw materials to ensure they meet specifications.
  • Test new raw materials in formulations to maintain quality and control costs.
  • Perform mechanical and physical tests on products to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Support other R&I departments as needed.
  • Work safely following company policies.

This apprenticeship offers a valuable entry into a career in material testing, with support throughout your journey, including the opportunity to become a registered Science Technician (RSci Tech). It can lead to various career paths across sectors like pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, nuclear, and education, and may pave the way for higher qualifications such as a BSc in Applied Bioscience or Chemical Science.
