An established industry player is seeking a dedicated Consultant in Emergency Medicine to enhance their Same Day Emergency Care Service. Job summary
Following developments in our Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Service, the Trust are now keen to expand their consultant numbers to provide modern, high-quality care. The successful candidate would be encouraged to continue development in their area of expertise of Emergency Medicine as well as SDEC.
The successful applicant's principal place of work will be Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. Other work locations including off site working may be agreed in your Job Plan where appropriate, e.g. for supporting professional activities and some direct clinical care such as audit notes. The successful applicant will generally be expected to undertake your Programmed Activities at the principal place of work or other locations agreed in the Job Plan. Exceptions will include travelling between work sites (if required) and attending official meetings away from the workplace. The successful applicant may be required to work at any site within your employing organisation.

Clinical Responsibilities:
In conjunction with consultant colleagues, managers, and senior nurses:
Ensure optimum care of all patients attending the Emergency Department including reception, triage, resuscitation, diagnosis, initial treatment and disposal of all emergencies. When on the shop floor the post holder will be expected to be actively involved ensuring that high quality clinical care is delivered and that relevant NHS standards are achieved.
Set standards and develop systems and guidelines for the clinical and operational management of patients.
Supporting the Clinical Director and the Clinical Lead of Emergency Department in the delivery of timely, high-quality care in accordance with the Trust and national priorities, particularly the 4-hour standard for patients in the Emergency Department and the Emergency Clinical Quality Indicators.
Develop and implement rolling training and audit programmes to support the induction and development of staff, high standards and effective clinical care.
Conduct the ward rounds of patients managed by the emergency department on the Observation Ward/Clinical Decision Unit.
Actively participate amongst other Consultants to champion and drive the generic SDEC service development and delivery.
Assist with the development of Major Incident plans and related work.
Strive toward achieving performance standards.
Medical Education & Teaching:
The Consultant will participate in the professional supervision, support, mentorship, organisation and delivery of formal teaching programs for all staff including:
Resident doctors, Specialist/Specialty Registrars, Senior Clinical Fellows, and F2s/SHOs/ST1-2s.
Nursing staff specifically the Emergency Nurse Practitioners, Advance Care Practitioners (ACPs), and RSCNs working with children in the department.
Medical students.
Ambulance Personnel.
Physician Associate students.
Undertake appropriate mentoring, appraisal and Educational / Clinical
Supervision of junior medical staff.
Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance:
Supervise / Participate in the Clinical Audit programme of Emergency Medicine Services in accordance with Departmental and Trust policy as well as Quality Improvement Projects(QIPs)
Comply with the Trusts Clinical Governance processes as stipulated by the Directorate and Medical Directors from time to time
The post holder will work with other consultant colleagues and as per directed by the CD or DMD for data quality and complying with the policies, procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the Trust for maintaining accuracy and probity in the recording of the Trusts activities.
Continuing Professional Development:
Participate in continuing professional development at local, regional and national level. The Consultant will be a Fellow of The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (or equivalent) and is expected to fulfil the Colleges CPD requirements.
The Consultant will contribute to clinical audit within the department and also to implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice.
Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy and in line with the GMC revalidation requirement.
The Consultant will ensure that he/she remains abreast of all developments in the field of Emergency Medicine and the delivery of Emergency Services.
Policy, Planning and Management:
Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care
Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines
Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service.
Comply with all Trust policies
Assist in ensuring that the Trust Clinical Governance Strategy is implemented.
Involvement in the recruitment and appointment of junior medical staff in consultation with consultant colleagues, Human Resources and managers.
Assist in the organisation of efficient staff duty rotas.
Contribute to good communications between the department and the other relevant staff/departments within the Trust, outside agencies including Social Services, PCTs, General Practitioners, other Emergency Departments in neighbouring Trusts and Ambulance Services.
