Job description

Position: Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA)
Location: Sunderland
Hours: Full-time

Role Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Higher-Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our supportive and inclusive team at a SEND school in Sunderland. As an HLTA, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality support to students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Your work will involve supporting students with a variety of needs, including learning, physical, emotional, and social challenges. You will work closely with the class teacher and other professionals to create a nurturing and effective learning environment that enables our students to thrive.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students with a range of SEND in individual, small group, and whole-class settings, ensuring that all students are fully included in the learning process.
  • Assist the class teacher in planning and delivering differentiated lessons to meet the specific needs of students with SEND.
  • Provide support for students with academic tasks, personal care needs, communication, and social skills development.
  • Help manage behaviour and implement individual behaviour plans, promoting positive attitudes and encouraging students to meet their potential.
  • Monitor and record students’ progress, providing feedback to teachers and other professionals to ensure the right level of support is provided.
  • Lead small group activities and interventions tailored to specific needs, including social skills, emotional regulation, and academic support.
  • Promote independence, self-confidence, and emotional well-being in students with SEND.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, including teachers, therapists, and external agencies, to provide holistic support for students.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all students in accordance with school policies and safeguarding procedures.

Requirements:

  • Experience working in a SEND school or similar educational setting is essential.
  • HLTA qualification or equivalent (Level 4 Teaching Assistant qualification or higher).
  • A deep understanding of SEND, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Speech and Language Difficulties (SPLD), and emotional or behavioural challenges.
  • Strong classroom management skills and the ability to implement strategies for supporting students with SEND.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  • A proactive, flexible, and empathetic approach to supporting students with diverse needs.
  • A commitment to continuous professional development and furthering knowledge of SEND practices.
  • An enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one).
  • The right to work in the UK.
