Bargaining Unit: Non-Union

Hiring Range: $66,682.13 - $75,000 (DOQ)

Department & Supervisor: Regional Public Health Director

Summary

The Towns of Shrewsbury, Grafton, and West Boylston are seeking two dedicated and knowledgeable Environmental Health Inspectors to join our new Regional Public Health Alliance. Under the leadership of the Regional Public Health Director, you'll play a key role in protecting and promoting public health across multiple communities through inspections, investigations, and education. This hands-on position ensures compliance with environmental and public health regulations related to food safety, housing, septic systems, pools, camps, and more. If you have a background in environmental or public health, a strong grasp of Massachusetts sanitary codes, and a passion for community well-being, we invite you to apply and make a regional impact.

What You'll Do

  • Conduct inspections of food establishments, housing, septic systems, pools, camps, and other regulated sites
  • Investigate environmental and public health complaints and hazards
  • Support communicable disease case follow-up and foodborne illness investigations
  • Review and process permits for regulated activities
  • Prepare inspection reports, enforcement notices, and legal documentation
  • Educate property owners, businesses, and the public on health codes and best practices
  • Assist with emergency response efforts and public health outreach programs
  • Stay current on changes to state and federal health regulations and codes

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, or a related field
  • 1–3 years of experience in environmental health or regulatory inspections
  • Knowledgeable in Massachusetts sanitary codes and public health laws
  • Skilled in conducting inspections, interpreting codes, and documenting findings
  • Excellent communicator with strong customer service and conflict resolution skills
  • Organized, tech-savvy, and able to manage multiple tasks independently
  • Certified or eligible to become a Massachusetts Registered Sanitarian within two years
  • Holds a valid MA driver’s license and has access to reliable transportation
  • Ready to travel throughout the region and adapt quickly in emergencies
