Job description

THE POSITION

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking a motivated and analytical individual for the role of Transportation Planning Specialist Trainee. In this position, you will provide technical assistance to the Bureau of Planning and Research in the Transportation Planning Division, Field Operations Unit. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Transportation Planning Specialist Trainee, you will deliver analytical and technical support through traffic data analysis used by various sources, including the Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS). You will report to the supervisor in the field operations unit and assist in all related activities. During training, you will learn to utilize transportation-specific applications, assist with project management, analyze field conditions to validate data, create project site activity reports, and draft scopes of work for site repairs, upgrades, or installations.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch
  • Extensive statewide travel, sometimes overnight, and occasional overtime may be required
  • Telework: Opportunity for part-time, ad-hoc telework from a secure, approved location inside Pennsylvania. If unable to telework, reporting to Harrisburg headquarters is available.
  • Salary: Starting salary may be non-negotiable in some cases.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics, statistics, planning, computer science, or geography
  • Or an equivalent combination of experience and training
  • Applicants within 3 months of graduation with a qualifying degree will be considered as meeting the educational requirements
