Job description

The Sompo Legal Department seeks a Legal Counsel to support the General Counsel, UK & Europe, and the broader UK and European legal team in insurance contract, distribution, regulatory questions, data privacy, and data protection matters.

The Legal Counsel will support a wide range of European insurance, reinsurance, contractual, and regulatory matters impacting Sompo’s European operations.

Responsibilities
  • Advise business colleagues, underwriters, and legal and compliance teams on legal and regulatory topics.
  • Stay updated on emerging laws and regulations in insurance and financial services.
  • Draft and negotiate contracts such as distribution agreements, broker agreements, data transfer agreements, and vendor contracts.
  • Provide legal advice on data protection and support the Global Data Protection Officer.
  • Assist in developing a data protection advisory framework.
  • Support insurance, reinsurance, and corporate legal matters as needed.
  • Conduct legal and regulatory research to ensure compliance across jurisdictions.
  • Advise internal stakeholders including underwriting, claims, finance, and operations.
  • Prepare materials for management and board meetings.
  • Draft and revise corporate policies and conduct training initiatives.
  • Monitor relevant legal and regulatory developments across jurisdictions.
  • Communicate with data protection agencies as necessary.
Desired Skills & Experience
  • Qualified solicitor (England and Wales) with a background in insurance law and compliance.
  • Post-qualification experience ideally in an insurance company, broker, or law firm.
  • Proven support experience in the insurance sector, in-house or at a law firm.
  • Deep knowledge of insurance contracts, regulation, and UK/EU data protection laws including GDPR.
  • Experience handling data breaches, investigations, and privacy assessments.
  • Up-to-date with privacy developments and EU insurance directives such as IDD, DORA, Solvency II.
  • Strong understanding of business needs and legal risk management.
  • Ability to draft and negotiate various commercial and insurance contracts.
  • Excellent communication skills for advising senior management and teams.
  • Experience in delivering training on data protection and legal matters.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Analytical, solution-focused mindset.
  • Interpersonal skills, professionalism, and discretion.
