The Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands (CTPWM) Investigations department are the primary lead for Terrorist Investigations affecting the West Midlands region, which involves the planning of arrest phases (executive action), the recovery and examination of exhibits/evidence, the reviewing of significant amounts of digital material and the post arrest detention, interview and post charge case management. This role is based in our modern offices near to Birmingham International Airport.

The role

As a Detective Constable within CTPWM you'll be part of a team of dedicated and highly trained investigators reporting to a Detective Sergeant and the Senior Investigating Officer. You'll be responsible for gathering and developing intelligence in line with the National Intelligence Model, together with gathering evidence in relation to investigations into criminal and or extremist behaviour/activities and terrorism related offences. This includes participating in arrests, interviews and processing of suspects in accordance with the relevant criminal legislation.

It is essential that you possess proven investigative experience and are either a substantive Detective Constable or are willing to work towards your ICIDP qualification and become a Detective Constable. A willingness to be flexible and travel at short notice is also required. Shift work and bank holiday working is a requirement of this role.

Responsibilities
  • Gathering and developing intelligence in line with the National Intelligence Model.
  • Gathering evidence in respect of criminal behaviour, extremist, subversive and terrorist activities / offences.
  • Attending operational briefings to maximise a two-way flow of information and intelligence.
  • Arresting and processing suspects for terrorism and/or criminal matters in accordance with current legislation.
  • Experience in developing and building cases in relation to criminal offences.
  • Assisting with the criminal justice process, including attending court.
Skills and competencies

Essential
  • Willing to work towards completing the ICIDP qualification.
  • Proven investigatory experience including the criminal justice process.
  • Evidence of dealing with exhibits and knowledge/experience of the CPIA process.
  • Effective interviewing and statement taking skills.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of the National Intelligence Model, together with the tasking and coordination process.
  • Ability to support a national CT Network requirement (This may involve deployment nationally for short periods of time).
  • Ability to work a shift pattern that will encompass early, late and weekend shifts as required.
Desirable Criteria
  • Knowledge and understanding of HOLMES investigations.
  • Knowledge of the role of Exhibits/Disclosure/Investigating Officer within a major investigation environment.
Material

You will be required to review material (audio or visual) that will be of a distressing nature on a regular basis. There is a framework in place to assist with mental health and wellbeing support should it be required.

Security Checks

This post requires British nationality (some dual nationalities may be ineligible) and Enhanced Security Check clearance with the willingness to undergo Developed Vetting when in post. You will need to undergo additional security clearance checks, with the offer of employment being conditional on obtaining all of the necessary security clearances.

There are limitations on travelling to a small number of countries once in post.
