Job description

The Post

Sutton Valence School is looking for a dedicated, dynamic, and inspirational teacher to teach Maths and Science from September 2025 on a one-year fixed-term contract. The candidate must promote high standards of teaching and learning, be innovative, and contribute to departmental development, while ensuring outstanding pupil pastoral care.

The candidate should be able to teach an engaging Mathematics curriculum to Juniors (Years 7 and 8), Physics as part of KS3 and KS4 double award, and general Science to Juniors. Adaptability and effective differentiation are crucial to cater for a broad ability range.

Opportunities include coaching major sports, participating in the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), the Community Service programme, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme, and various clubs and activities.

All teachers are expected to be actively involved in co-curricular and sports programmes and to take an active role in pastoral care, which is based on a house system with vertical tutor groups.

The Science Department

The Science Department comprises 9 staff: three Biology, three Physics, and three Chemistry teachers. Each department has a Head of Subject and a Head of Science. We are a committed team dedicated to academic and pastoral excellence, supporting each other. Each member has a personal laboratory, supported by a dedicated technician, with a full range of apparatus up to A Level. As a fully digital school, all teachers receive laptops, and resources are provided online. Labs are equipped with interactive whiteboards.

We believe students learn Science best through engaging practical activities, from organ dissections to ecology sampling. Practical skills are developed from Year 7, building a foundation for A Level, including techniques like colorimetry, serial dilutions, and chromatography. Our curriculum aims to inspire independent thinking, data analysis, and evaluation skills, fostering confident, independent learners.

The Maths Department

The Mathematics Department promotes success and enjoyment of the subject. We encourage creative teaching approaches and collaboration among staff. We support all pupils through various activities, including national competitions like UKMT challenges, the National Cipher Challenge, and our own Junior competition. Extension sessions and guidance prepare students aiming for university Mathematics courses.

We use Edexcel for both A Level and GCSE (International GCSE), with top students offered AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics. There is strong uptake at A Level, with opportunities to study Further Mathematics. Mathematics is also part of our Activities enrichment slot, providing additional depth and support for students in other subjects with high mathematical content.
