JOB PURPOSE

To drive any vehicle allocated in a careful, lawful manner with special reference to the persons and equipment being carried.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Transport children, including those with mobility problems or severe/moderate learning difficulties to and from school or other authorised locations.
2. Assist children, including those with mobility problems, in and out of the vehicle.
3. Ensure good behaviour of children on the bus where practicable and report any behaviour incidents to the Transport Officer or designated person.
4. Operate lifts and ramps on vehicles as required and ensure wheelchairs are properly clamped and secured.
5. Provide minor first aid to passengers and ensure injured children receive medical attention promptly. Complete and submit relevant injury or accident reports to the Transport Officer without delay.
6. Direct School Bus escorts, where employed, in assisting with the above duties.
7. Transport meals from and return empty containers to School Meals Kitchens and assist at schools as required.
8. Ensure scheduled timings are observed and keep detailed records of journeys, fuel issues, oil, servicing, and repairs.
9. Carry out daily routine vehicle checks, including fuel, condition, oil, water levels, tyre pressures, and topping up as needed.
10. Complete defect reports and submit to engineers.
11. Comply with EU drivers’ hours, Tachograph regulations, and Working Time Directive for mobile workers.
12. Ensure the safe custody of all spare parts, tools, articles, and equipment carried in the vehicle or under immediate control.
13. Wash the vehicle as necessary and keep the interior clean and tidy.
14. Follow the provisions in the Education Authority’s Drivers’ Manual.

General Conditions

• Carry out duties in compliance with the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, Acts of Parliament, regulations, and legal requirements.
• Perform duties in the usual working conditions of the job.
• Complete all necessary paperwork.
• Carry out duties up to and including those of the same grade, within competence.
