Job description

Research Associate in High-performance 2D Membranes (KK12574) - Bath, BA2 7AY

The Department of Chemical Engineering is seeking a Research Associate in High-performance 2D Membranes to provide subject-specific research expertise and undertake collaborative research within the department.

About the role

This is a full-time, 24-month, fixed-term position and is part of the EPSRC-funded Programme Grant SynHiSel, a major collaboration linking membrane researchers at Bath, Manchester, Newcastle, Imperial College, Queen Mary, and Edinburgh Universities.

Chemical separations are essential to many aspects of daily life, from energy use to medications. They consume 10-15% of global energy, with novel membranes potentially making these processes 10x more energy-efficient, saving 100 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions and £3.5 billion annually (US DoE). At Bath, we have developed a new class of inherently stable 2D membranes for liquid separations, overcoming the limitations of graphene-based membranes, using abundant and inexpensive feedstock materials. In this 2-year postdoctoral role, you will explore new applications and work on manufacturing scale-up in collaboration with academic and industrial partners.

About you

You should have prior expertise in membrane fabrication using 2D nanomaterials, membrane characterization, and testing in liquid separations.

You will join a multidisciplinary team with expertise in materials, chemistry, process engineering, and water treatment, working with Prof John Chew and Prof Davide Mattia in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath.

As a Research Staff member, you will be encouraged to undertake at least 10 days of professional development per year.

Please note, a lower grade (Grade 6) offer may be made, with reduced responsibilities and a job title of Research Assistant. To be eligible, you should be within six months of completing your PhD, and your title will be promoted to Research Associate upon PhD completion.
